New York, NY – June 3, 2022 – In an investigation airing on Friday, INSIDE EDITION speaks to Nicole Oulson, the wife of the man who was gunned down in a Florida movie theater. She is speaking out for the first time since his killer was acquitted.
“Not guilty, at least to me, does not equal innocent,” Oulson tells INSIDE EDITION.
It was date night when Nicole and Chad Oulson went to the movies to see the Mark Wahlberg action movie Lone Survivor. Before the movie even started, they got into an argument with 71-year-old Curtis Reeves.
Chad Oulson was texting their daughter’s babysitter when Reeves told him to put away his phone. It escalated from there and Oulson threw a bag of popcorn at Reeves, when he took out a handgun and shot him in the chest.
The deadly incident happened outside Tampa in 2014. After 8 years of delays, a jury found Reeves not guilty of second-degree murder after he claimed he acted in self-defense, saying he feared for his life.
“To me, no, justice was not done,” says Oulson. “There was doubt and what was that the jury saw I don’t know. Maybe it was his age or that he was prior police.”
Nicole was also injured in the shooting when the bullet hit her ring finger.
“It’s a little crooked and I can’t bend or close it all the way,” Oulson tells INSIDE EDITION.
She and their now 10-year-old daughter Lexy are trying to move forward by launching The Oulson Family Foundation in hopes of helping victims of gun violence.
“This is the light at the end of the where we can turn things around and give back and keep his legacy alive,” Oulson tells INSIDE EDITION.
