INSIDE EDITION: JORAN VAN DER SLOOT’S BIGGEST FINANCIAL SUPPORTER SAYS SHE WANTS HER MONEY BACK
To be broadcast Jan. 30
New York, NY – Jan. 30 – Joran Van Der Sloot’s biggest supporter, Mary Hamer, tells INSIDE EDITION she wants her money back. The 55-year-old radiologist from Florida says has spent approximately $100,000 – her life savings – to prove Van Der Sloot’s innocence in the death of a Peruvian heiress.
INSIDE EDITION: “You gave him $100,000. Why?”
HAMER: “Most of that $100,000 is bail money.”
INSIDE EDITION: “Do you want your money back?”
HAMER: “Yes, because I found out through an attorney that bail is impossible in Peru if you are charged with murder. I didn’t know that…I trusted people…believe me, I’ve learned my lesson.”
Van Der Sloot never posted bail and he pled guilty. He has now been sentenced to 28 years in prison. Hamer – who describes herself as Van Der Sloot’s “spiritual guide” – tells INSIDE EDITION that he was intimated into pleading guilty and blames his Peruvian defense attorney.
However, Hamer admits to INSIDE EDITION that even Van Der Sloot’s own mother has warned her to stop helping him – saying he’s not worth it.
HAMER: “She said to me quote some lives are not to save. I said, excuse me Anita, every life is precious. Every life is worth saving. Because I give him unconditional, spiritual love. When you love someone, you extend a helping hand to someone, unconditionally…whether they have killed someone or not.
INSIDE EDITION: “Was it worth wiping out your own savings?”
HAMER: “For Joran. Yes it has been worth it.”
INSIDE EDITION: “You know people say that you sound crazy.”
HAMER: “Well, I do have the disease called compassion. I reach out to people who are suffering.”
INSIDE EDITION is produced daily by Inside Edition Inc. and distributed by CBS Television Distribution.
