FORMER GIRLFRIEND OF ACCUSED MURDERER IN PETIT HOMICIDES FEARS SHE MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE MOTIVE FOR THE ROBBERY

New York, NY - October 6, 2010 - Inside Edition speaks with Caroline Mesel, the former girlfriend of Josh Komisarjevsky, one of the men accused of murdering Jennifer Petit and her daughters, Hayley and Michaela, in a horrific home invasion.

Mesel: "It disgusts me.  It makes me sick to my stomach."

His alleged accomplice, Steven Hayes, has just been found guilty of capital murder and may be sentenced to death.

21-year-old Mesel believes that both men deserve to die.

Mesel: "I get so mad thinking about it.  I wish I could do to him what he did to the girls and feel what they went through."

Mesel tells Inside Edition she fears she may have been the unwitting motive for the home invasion.

Her family moved to Arkansas while they were dating - and she says Komisarjevsky was desperate to raise $15,000 to bring her back to Connecticut so they could be together.

Mesel: "He's like, ‘I would even rob a bank to get the money for you.'"

She says he promised her that he would get the money for her.  $15,000 is exactly the amount Jennifer Petit was forced to withdraw from her bank while her family was being held hostage.

Mesel tells Inside Edition she feels guilty because Komisarjevsky may have been trying to get the money for her.

Mesel: "I did go through the whole guilt thing.  This is my fault.  Maybe if I was in Connecticut they would still be alive today.  I could probably have prevented it."

Mesel also says she thinks constantly about the Petit family.

Mesel: "He should not be living in a jail cell and still have his life when he took those girls' lives away."
