INSIDE EDITION INVESTIGATES: COULD USING SOME WIRELESS BABY MONITORS PUT YOUR FAMILY AT RISK?
To Be Broadcast: Monday, September 14, 2009 on WPIX-TV, 6 PM
New York, NY - September 11, 2009 - INSIDE EDITION's investigative unit drove around a New York neighborhood and found that private moments captured on a wireless baby monitor weren't so private.
The technology is simple. Baby monitors that send out a wireless signal allow mom and dad to see their child on a handheld device in another room. But sometimes that signal can be picked up outside the home by a popular and inexpensive rearview camera device many people have in their cars -- devices intended to keep the driver from backing into something. But the cameras can pick up much, much more.
In this report, a New York mother of four uses a baby monitor in her son Cody's room but had no idea the video could be transmitted outside her home. INSIDE EDITION'S Matt Meagher showed her how a monitor set up in her son's room broadcast the video to a car outside.
MOTHER: "It's very upsetting because I'm in there all the time with my girls. I change clothes in there."
MATT MEAGHER: "It's creepy, isn't it?"
MOTHER: "It's invasive, yes."
When INSIDE EDITION drove past a home in Howard Beach, Queens, the car camera picked up video of her young son Vincent, climbing in his crib. And it picked up everything the mom did and said.
TARA: "I'm shocked. I'm terrified. I'm very upset. I spent $300 for the whole world to see what's going on inside my house."
Security expert Patrick Brosnan warns that some baby monitors and even security cameras can give bad guys golden opportunities. He says if you're going to use a wireless baby monitor or any wireless security device inside your home, realize that a stranger might be able to hear and see what's going on in your home.
