SALLY YATES OPENS UP TO NORAH O’DONNELL ABOUT HER CANCER DIAGNOSIS AND WHAT SHE WANTS OTHER PEOPLE TO KNOW

In a New “CBS Evening News” Exclusive, Former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates Reveals Breast Cancer Battle to Norah O’Donnell: “Five Days Before I Was to Testify… I Got the Final Diagnosis that It Was Invasive Cancer”

For the first time, former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates reveals in an interview with Norah O’Donnell her experience battling breast cancer and road to recovery. Yates shares intimate details about being diagnosed shortly before testifying to Congress in August 2020 about Russian interference in the 2016 election.

It was, I think, just about five days before I was to testify in the Senate Judiciary Committee, about the Russia investigation, that I got the final diagnosis that it was invasive cancer.” Yates tells O’Donnell in a newly released clip, which aired today on CBS MORNINGS. Watch here.

Yates also penned an exclusive essay about her experience that’s published now on CBSNews.com: “You have cancer”: Sally Yates opens up about her diagnosis and what she wants other women to know.

More of O’Donnell’s exclusive interview with Yates airs tonight, Oct. 28, only on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH NORAH O’DONNELL (6:30-7:00 PM, ET).

Transcript of early interview excerpt:

NORAH O’DONNELL: I think about the timing of this last summer, shortly after you were testifying before Congress and speaking at the Democratic National Convention. What was it like going through such a private battle while being a public person?

SALLY YATES: Well, you know, that was odd. You know, I tend to compartmentalize my life in some ways. And professionally, you know, much of my professional life has been somewhat in the public eye. I’m a pretty private person. But this was one of those times where the personal and the professional collided. And so it was, I think, just about five days before I was to testify in the Senate Judiciary Committee, about the Russia investigation, that I got the final diagnosis that it was invasive cancer.

NORAH O’DONNELL: And that’s some pretty important testimony that you were about to give.

SALLY YATES: It was.
