CBS NEWS CORRESPONDENT STEVE HARTMAN GOES “ON THE ROAD” WITH CAPTAIN CHESLEY SULLENBERGER The World-renowned Pilot also Visits his Crashed Plane for the First Time
December 2, 2011
Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, III, who became an international hero in 2009 when he and his crew safely guided US Airways flight 1549 to an emergency water landing in New York City’s Hudson River, will be featured in CBS News Correspondent Steve Hartman’s “On the Road” series, tonight, Dec. 2, on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY (6:30-7:00PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
In tonight’s installment of “On the Road,” Sullenberger and Hartman will take a joyride journey from Miami to Charlotte aboard a vintage 1958 Eastern Airlines DC-7 airplane. Sullenberger also goes to the Carolinas Aviation Museum to board his wrecked airliner for the first time since the Hudson landing.
Sullenberger, who was hailed as a hero after the “Miracle on the Hudson” landing, retired from US Airways in 2010 after 30 years as a commercial pilot. He was named CBS News Aviation and Safety Expert in May 2011. CBS News revived its “On the Road” franchise this year, which was started by legendary CBS News Correspondent Charles Kuralt in 1967.
