Drew, Jeremy Renner & Edie Falco on Raising Teenage Daughters

Drew: What have you guys done in practice to not take it personally?

Edie: I mean, for me it was hard won because I took a lot of it personally and then we went through some real rocky times and through various workshops and parenting this that and the other thing, I learned that, she is just individuating, I think is the word she's becoming a separate person and this is part of what she needs to do in order to do that. When you put them in like scientific terms, it's much easier to manage. It's not about me and she says mean stuff and she knows how to get at me.

Drew: But they know how to push the buttons. You all planted them.

Edie: That's exactly right. But when time passes and you don't take this stuff personally, the fights go away quicker, the healing happens much quicker and she is 17 now, like whatever, 4 years past the worst, and she is probably my favorite person on the planet. Did not see that coming. We went through a lot.

Drew: How do you not take it personally?

Jeremy: I changed the sort of the language in it. You know, cause it was like, she is my number one, always been my number one, but I'm not her number one anymore. I'm like, I don't know if I'm anywhere on the list. But I do have a very deep, deep relationship with her for two reasons, just being the male figure for her, we're very, very close in that way and also the incident, the accident, coming, you know, she knew that her dad was not around. Now it's not a, it doesn't wipe the slate clean from me on that but I, you know what it is, it's, it's more that she's not really doesn't lash out a lot. She internalizes a lot and I see her struggle and that kind of really hurts me watching her struggle, you know, you don't wanna see your kid really suffer and she really kind of does, you know, as a lot of kids do so I just, like you said, I don't want to take things personally. I try to like help her rationalize things out. I'm like, what am I even doing this for? There’s not a rational bone in her in her brain right now.

Drew: And I love humor as a coping mechanism, but that does not always land. But I, that's my go to is to go to the funny and when I do see it lift the veil, I'm like, oh thank God the humor worked. I love jokes. They lighten up everything for me.

Edie Falco on Being Nervous About Portraying Carmela in “The Sopranos”

Drew: Did you know that you were creating such a legendary character?

Edie: I knew I had a job for a few months. That's all you really know in the beginning and I was not married and had no kids, and here I was, you know, expected to portray this woman deeply married for many years, the mother of two children, and that my biggest worry is that no one would buy it. I just never thought I could pull that off. Didn't feel like I had a parenting bone in my body, but, you know, nobody said anything, so I guess it was all right, but I was really nervous about that. I thought I don't know how to be.

Drew: Have you ever played a parent before you were a parent?

Jeremy: Yeah.

Drew: Did you also have a little bit of imposter syndrome like.

Jeremy: Well, I think I had a little practice just being the oldest of 7 kids and then I birthed like my sister and then, you know, I've been growing up changing diapers, so some of that's kind of was in my, my DNA.

Drew: A man who changes diapers. It is so awesome.
