Clive Owen Plays Behind-the-Scenes and Dishes on Filming “Curb Your Enthusiasm” “Inside Man” & More

Drew: Let’s start with ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.’

Clive: Highlight of my career.

Drew: Tell me everything.

Clive: I’m the biggest fan of that show, of all the people in it and him.

Drew: What’s Larry David like?

Clive: He’s kind of brilliant. He’s kind of like the show. I also felt, I walked into the scene and there was the whole group of them and I felt so out of my depth because they’re so good and they’re so good at improvising.

Drew: I was gonna say I heard there was a lot of improv.

Clive: You don’t get a script you just get told the shape of the scene and when they get going you just have to sit. I thought the safest thing to do was just be the straight guy do it as straight as you can. Don’t try to be funny against these heavyweights.

Drew: Okay this is one of the best movies ever, ‘Inside Man’ directed by Spike Lee starring Jodie Foster and Denzel Washington.

Clive: There was a funny story about how when I first got the script I didn’t take the mask off. I go in the bank, I put the mask on and that was it for the rest of the movie. They called me in and I said, ‘Why would I want to do this.’ So, we met and he took me to the basketball, didn’t mention the film at all. Finish the game I’m having the time of my life…he turned and said, ‘So are you doing it or what?’ I said, ‘After that night of course I’m doing it.’

Drew: You’ve been married for twenty-nine years. What’s a good way to have longevity in a relationship?

Clive: Find someone who’s fantastic. I was lucky I met Sarah Jane playing Romeo and Juliet when we were very young. She came into the read through and had glasses and a pile of books she’s been buying. She was a little late and dropping the books and I fell for her right there.
