Jane Fonda on Lily Playing a Completely Different Character in Their New Movie and Jane and Lily Reflect on Working on “9 to 5” with Dolly Parton

Jane: One of the joys for me, we knew it was really important to play characters that were completely different than Grace and Frankie, I was watching her be this totally different person from the person I had been playing opposite ten days earlier.

Drew: And that’s what you fell in love with when you saw her in that one woman play, the chameleon that she is. I mean the body of work that you have individually and collectively leads me to ask you if you’ll play my favorite game with me.

Jane: Sure, I’ll play any game.

Drew: Okay it’s a game called behind the scenes. I’ll mention a few films you’ve done together and individually…’9 to 5.’

Jane: Oh my god I don’t think we ever stopped laughing on that movie.

Lily: No we laughed quite a bit. Mostly at Dolly’s costumes.

Jane: Yeah and the fact that she couldn’t see her hands when she was typing. My son was about six then and she said, ‘Troy do you know why my feet are so small?’ and I remember he looked up to me like, ‘Am I supposed to say something here?’ and he was bright red and she said, ‘Things don’t grow big in the shade.’

Jane on Her Iconic Workout Tapes

Drew: I have to say that, this is true that this sold over 17 million copies, and was such a game changer for the industry that it also affected the VCR industry, like you personally ignited the industrial revolution of the VCR…

Jane: I had no idea. This man named Stuart Carl, who is I think the only person whose ever made a VCR for home use, it was home improvement. His name is Stuart Carl, and it sold maybe 200, nobody bought it. I didn’t know anyone who owned a VCR, much less a VCR player because of how expensive it was, and so he came to me wanting to make a video of my workout and I said, ‘No,’ because I mean why go to all that trouble to sell 200, and he kept after me and eventually I said yes as I usually tend to do when someone keeps after me. I finally, took me about sixty years, learned that no is a complete sentence…

Ike Barinholtz on Why Watching Gordon Ramsay Yell at People Calms Him

https://app.cimediacloud.com/mediaboxes/a8f53a4993c1487ba86c380b61168090

Drew: Is it true watching Gordon Ramsay rip people calms you down?

Ike: When I’m writing and I need to take a break, watching him yell at someone just makes me feel good. I don’t know what that says about me but then I go back to being positive and nice and just generally lovely.

Drew: You are Ike, you are.
