Drew’s News: Ross and Drew Weigh in on the Nepo Baby Conversation

Drew: The convo really heated up last month. It’s been around for about six months but now it’s hit a boiling point. New York Magazine published an article about Hollywood nepotism basically making a list of actors who have famous parents implying they only got famous because they came from a famous family…I feel like it probably makes people feel like it diminishes their hard work. I was in there. I was known as a nepo baby in this article, but my grandfather died in 1942, so I don’t know how much nepotism, you know they were all gone and so I don’t know. One part of me is like, ‘I’m a nepo baby who cares, bring it on,’ and then I think it may also make people feel like, ‘Wait I worked really hard to get here, you’re just thinking it was all handed to me because of my parents.’

Ross: …I guess you’re right there must be expectations put on you or people don’t take it seriously, they think it’s just nepotism.

Drew: Yeah I think that’s my fear is I don’t want people who are trying to make it feel bad because everyone thinks it was just because of your parents you got here. That would be in any family business…

Gerard Butler on Being the First Trainee Lawyer in the History of the Scottish Legal System to be Fired

Drew: You were a fully fledged lawyer, like a real lawyer?

Gerard:…That’s actually not true. Well, it’s mostly true. I went through law school, I got an honors law degree, I got a diploma and legal practice. I did my two years training to become a lawyer, minus a week. I wasn’t doing very well. I hated what I was doing, I wanted to be an actor, and about a week before they sat me down, they said, ‘This isn’t really for you is it? This is not really what you want to do,’ and I became the first trainee lawyer in the history of the Scottish legal system to be fired. So I’m kind of proud of that. But the next day I packed my bags, moved to London and that was it. I said, ‘In a way, I’ve been released to do what I want to do.’

Gerard on Filming His Famous “This is Sparta” Line

Drew: Is it true that like, ‘This is Sparta’ was a line in the script but it’s really you that like gave it that energy and life, what possessed?

Gerard: Well, yeah because we had that conversation, he goes, ‘This is madness,’ and I was like, ‘This is madness. This is Sparta,’ and we did a few takes like that. I did one a little louder and then the scene was done, the guys were kind of moving the camera away and I go, ‘No, no, no wait,’ because I suddenly thought, ‘What about the wildness in these men. There’s a wildness and a surprise’…So they bring it back and I go, ‘Madness, this is Sparta’ boom and they went, ‘Cut,’ and I turn around and everybody was laughing behind me….and I go over to the director and I’m like, ‘That was too much right?’ and he goes,’ Yeah, but it was awesome.’

Drew: Now Gerard you were born and raised in Scotland, is it true that you are not supposed to wear anything under your kilt?

Gerard: It’s an absolute must, oh yeah absolutely…they’re real men Scotsman.

Drew:…So when you wear a kilt you’re totally just free balling it?

Gerard: I guess that’s a way to describe it, yeah you’re free balling it. And you normally do it at weddings…we would not survive in Hollywood very long because it’s a very Scottish thing to go, ‘Have a look there.’

Drew: Have you ever done that?

Gerard: Yes, of course.
