Ina Garten on Her Disastrous First Date with Husband of 54 Years Jeffrey

https://workspace.cimediacloud.com/r/RguDHj7lFNCZ

Drew:…Will you tell me about your first date?

Ina: A disaster. Why he ever wanted to see me again I have no idea. I was in high school and he was at Dartmouth. We had a mutual friend and he’d seen me walking around the campus of Dartmouth and he asked the friend could he call me. So, he called, and I just knew he was a friend of the friend and I thought, ‘Well, he’s a Dartmouth guy so he probably wants to like go to a bar or something,’ I had never been to a bar and so I said, ‘Oh let’s just go this bar Hilltop,’ like I’d been there many times. I was totally cool. So, we parked there and walk in and there are two big guys at the door and I said, ‘What was that?’ I didn’t understand what they were saying. And finally Jeffrey said, ‘They want your ID,’ and I said to him, ‘What’s that?’ I had no idea that I needed fake ID to get into a bar when I was sixteen.

Drew: And what happened?

Ina: We turned around and left. And so many years later I said, ‘What did you think, like why did you want to take me out again?’ He said, ‘I thought you needed taking care of,’ which is so sweet.

Jerry:…So when we found out that this was happening we kinda came up with a plan and what we decided to do was to name the road which is right next to where the old barefoot Contessa was ‘Ina Garten Way.’…Ina’s an icon in the world and we have her right here in East Hampton. It’s just wonderful for all of us.

Ina:…You know when I first came to East Hampton I remember looking around and thinking, ‘It is so elegant. It’s so beautiful. I don’t know that I’ll ever fit in here.’ And now I have my own street.

Ina on Stanley Tucci’s Martini Magic

Ross: Is it true your first ever martini?

Ina: Ever. I don’t know, I was terrified. It was 9 o’clock in the morning so I thought, ‘Am I actually gonna be able to finish the show?’

Ross: Because it’s a strong drink it’s all alcohol.

Ina: It is but the way Stanley made it was incredible. It was delicious. He said, ‘Would you like it with olives or lemon?’ I said, ‘What are you gonna do?’ and he said, ‘Both.’ I said, ‘I’ll have what he’s having.’

Ross:…Where was your first kiss with Jeffrey?

Ina: In front of my house. In the car when I thought he was never gonna see again on that first date.

Ross: Did you make the first move or did he?

Ina: Oh, not me. I’m very shy

Ross: Do you and Jeffrey have any pets names for each other?

Ina: We don’t have pet names but I know what he’s thinking by the way he calls my name, Ina R. Garten means I’ve done something really outrageous.

Drew & Ina on Not Hobknobbing and Keeping a Small Circle of Friends

Drew: I’m so honored to make your acquaintance. I’m not good at hobknobbing, I’m just not.

Ina: I understand. We love our friends around us and we love to keep it really tight but not socializing with, just hanging out.

Drew: It’s true. I have friends and they’ll say, “So and so came,’ and I’m like, ‘That’s a lot.’ I’d rather kick it with my friends who I’m so at ease with.
