Drew: Is it true that like Johnny Depp asked you to marry him after dating for a few weeks?

Jennifer: It’s worse than that…I was engaged to Matthew Broderick and Jonny Depp in the same month…yeah it was really a sign that there was trouble afoot on my part. I mean honestly, I just thought it was God rescuing me from one bad situation and just lovingly plopping me into a Johnny Depp souffle. You have to understand, Johnny Depp, 1989 Johnny Depp so beautiful, you’ve never seen a more beautiful…you have to read the description in the book, it’s almost inhuman.

Jennifer: I did not do it until the day we shot it…it must’ve been making the producers and Patrick and the director, everyone insane because I refused, I literally was too scared, I refused, and I basically just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t make myself until the day when all the people were watching and then I had to do it…

Jennifer: It would be weird for me to say that if it weren’t true that she said it to me, but maybe she said it to everyone.

Drew: I don’t know. You were really good friends with her.

Jennifer: We were super tight at that moment, she was the one who was just broken up with Sean, I had just broken up with Matthew and she threw a party for me and she was…that’s my polaroid, that’s the stripper party that she threw for me…she had the waiter start to strip to ‘Time of Your Life’…so here she was like saying to me like you know being that girlfriend, you know everyone needs a girlfriend who can tell you if you did the right thing or it’s gonna be okay, you’ll meet someone else or whatever…and so I’m in the log cabin, Carrie Fisher’s log cabin in Laurel Canyon and she said ‘Hey I just did a song’…I said, ‘Well let’s listen in here’ she goes, ‘No my sound system is better’ so we get in the car, she closes the door and she plays it for me and she said, ‘I wrote this, you inspired you me’ so she’s never said it publicly and I actually wrote her recently and I said ‘I wrote about you in my book, is this true?’ and she was like, ‘Send it to me.’

Drew: Tom Cruise, you were doing a screen test with him….how did that go, what was Tom Cruise like?

Jennifer: Well, I was friends with Tom Cruise…I felt like his older sister you know what I mean, like he was asking me for relationship advice and stuff like that, so we go to the screen test and I’m like, ‘Okay he’s my old friend’ so then we have to do the bed scene, some love scene and it’s a chemistry read, they’re trying to see how hot you are together…and I just couldn’t stop laughing the whole time. And, the more I laughed, the more mad he got, until finally the director was like, ‘Hey, I think we’re done here.’

 

Zosia Mamet on People Always Thinking They Know Her Because of Her Character from “Girls”

Drew: It’s literally the ten-year anniversary and it was so groundbreaking.

Zosia: Obviously we all, like when we were making ‘Girls’ we’re like, ‘We think this is really great and important’ but like you just never know and so the fact that it had the response that it did was like, I mean it was life changing obviously, and because we all played these characters that were just like baring our souls and our bodies and our lives, people felt like they knew us, and I think particularly Shoshana as a character whose just so out there and like unabashed in who she is and is an over sharer herself, so yes I think people felt like they were my best friend. I would get people who didn’t necessarily recognize me from the show but they thought they knew me, I’ve literally had showdowns with people in airports where they’re like, ‘You went to camp Ottawa with me’ and I’m like, ‘Look I promise, I would not lie. Actually not having gone to summer camp is a sore subject for me because I did not get to go.’

Drew: How did you guys meet?

Zosia: …We met doing a play together, and we fell in love immediately, and we dated secretly for the whole run of the show which was very fun and exciting, and then like a week before the show wrapped we totally got caught, fully red-handed…our schedule was a little bit funny with our Saturday matinees and for some reason would swap between two and three o’clocks…and we were just having a nice time and all of the sudden we both looked at our phones and we had like twenty-five missed calls and it was 1:48 and we did not have a three o’clock matinee, we had a two o’clock matinee and we were both in towels with wet hair…and we got there with two minutes to spare and we went on stage and I think it was actually one of our earliest curtains we went on at like 2:05, but we fully walked in and we were like, ‘We were having lunch together’ and everyone was like, ‘Really, lunch?’

And they’re like, ‘Feel free to improv’ and I was like, ‘Okay great’ and…she walked up and I turned around she booped me on the nose, she literally went boop, and I went, ‘Ugh I hate it when you do that, don’t do that’ and I smacked her hand away and we’ve said since that’s the moment that our friendship was born, we fell in love…
