CULVER CITY, CALIF. (January 15, 2015) – John Schultz, a 29-year-old computer programmer from Ann Arbor, Mich., ended his five-game JEOPARDY! winning streak today, finishing with $104,500 in total prize money.
“I’m not even sure how to feel yet,” Schultz said after his final game. “I’m trying not to get overenthusiastic about a total dollar amount that ultimately doesn’t really qualify as ‘life-changing’ … but, holy cow, I won $104,500! At the end of every game, I snuck a look at my wife in the audience to kind of let the dollar amounts sink in together. It’s really fun to think about!”
Schultz, who holds a dual B.S. degrees from the University of Michigan in Computer Science and Latin, prepared in various ways for his appearance on JEOPARDY!.
“My wife read me over 3,000 questions on a long road trip to New Jersey, and I went through another 7,000 or so myself,” he said. “I also used a computer program to drill on hundreds more flashcards, mostly related to geography.”
Schultz plans to put some of his winnings towards purchasing a house, traveling, and encouraging his wife to turn her baking hobby into a business.
“I don’t expect to rent a storefront, but I am very interested in seeing what it would take to pass food safety hurdles or start selling goods at a farmer’s/artisan’s market or something,” he said. “She’s good, and it’s not just me saying so.”
