THE DOCTORS & SELF MAGAZINE TEAM-UP AGAIN TO REVEAL TOP TIPS FROM AMERICA’S HEALTHIEST CITIES

EPISODE AIRS NOVEMBER 20 – SAME DAY ISSUE ON STANDS
(Hollywood, CA – November 16, 2012) Today, SELF Magazine announced its 12th annual ranking of the “Best Cities for Women” in America in the December issue, recognizing San Jose, CA as the “Healthiest Overall City” in 2012. For the second consecutive year, SELF Editor-in-Chief Lucy Danziger will appear on the Emmy®-winning syndicated daytime series, THE DOCTORS, on November 20 (check local listings) to reveal the full results of the annual survey; the same day the December-issue feature arrives on newsstands nationwide.
To find America’s healthiest cities, SELF compiled 7,000 bits of data from sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), analyzing details such as access to medical care and athletic clubs, crime statistics, and the availability of healthy foods, among other factors. Cities that topped the list behind San Jose, CA include Burlington, VT which boasts the healthiest eaters; Santa Barbara, CA, which earns the title of fittest city; and the returning city of Honolulu, HI that made the list again for having the lowest combined rates of cancer, depression, asthma, and allergies.
THE DOCTORS countdown the full list of healthy cities and reveal one locale that doesn’t mind sparking controversy in the pursuit of health. Northern California’s San Rafael recently banned smoking in all multi-family homes due to the health risks associated with second-hand smoke. THE DOCTORSwelcomes residents from the town to debate the issue of health over the right to smoke in your own home. THE DOCTORSco-host and SELF editor, Lucy Danziger, also share top tips to eating healthy on a budget, how to beat depression like Santa Ana, CA residents, and how San Francisco’s progressive approach to health minimizes risks for its citizens.
“The “Best Cities for Women” survey is a prime example of the type of health information that viewers of THE DOCTORSrelish,” said Carla Pennington, executive producer of THE DOCTORS. “We’re thrilled to lend the incredible medical expertise of our co-hosts this year to build on the success of the annual review.”
“SELF shares a common goal withTHE DOCTORSin providing reliable health information to women and their families,” said Ms. Danziger. “We have partnered again to prove that it’s not an address that determines your health; it’s your attitude. Well-being can be maintained and improved no matter where you live.”
