First Full Daytime Hour Devoted to Ongoing Debate Features

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Rev. Jim Garlow, Joe Solmonese, Margaret Gallagher, Gloria Allred and Jeff Flint Lead the Discussion

November 20, 2008 (Los Angeles, CA) - The platform? DR. PHIL. The debate?  The ongoing controversy surrounding the passage of Proposition 8 on Election Day.  During Tuesday's taping, the first full daytime broadcast devoted to the subject, guests came together to debate their position on an issue that has only intensified over the past two weeks.  The broadcast is scheduled to air on Friday, November 21 (check local listings).

"This show is not about sensationalism, it's an intelligent thought provoking discussion on the issue," said Dr. Phil. 

Representing "yes" on Prop. 8 were Rev. Jim Garlow, Senior Pastor of Skyline Wesleyan Church in La Mesa, California, Margaret Gallagher, President of the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy and Jeff Flint of Flint Public Affairs.  On the "no" side were San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, attorney Gloria Allred and Joe Solmonese, President of the Human Rights Campaign.  The show also featured gay and straight married couples expressing their views.       

During the debate, Gallagher said that "no American should be subjected to a campaign calling them haters and bigots, threatening their property, threatening their persons, threatening their livelihoods, because they peacefully and lawfully participated in the democratic process, especially not religious minorities." 

As the passionate discussion continued, Newsom pointed out that "Californians, for the first time in their history, changed the constitution to take peoples' rights away. The Bill of Rights has been changed 17 times and every time to expand peoples' rights, not to deny peoples' rights. This was a devastating, devastating day."
