JOIE CHEN JOINS CBS NEWS

AS A WASHINGTON, D.C.-BASED CORRESPONDENT

Joie Chen has joined CBS News as a correspondent based in Washington, D.C., it was announced by Marcy McGinnis, Senior Vice President, News Coverage, CBS News. The appointment is effective tomorrow (13).

Chen most recently was anchor of CNN's weekday afternoon program (2001-02). Before that, she co-anchored several other CNN programs and won the 1996 CableACE Award (with her co-anchor, Leon Harris) in the Best Newscasters category. She anchored or co-anchored several other programs after joining CNN in 1994.

Chen had previously worked for CNN International (1991-94), interviewing international newsmakers and anchoring breaking coverage of many major events, including the Timothy McVeigh verdict, the Atlanta Olympic Park bombing and the death of North Korean leader Kim Il-Sung. She also wrote and produced stories for CNNI.

Before joining CNN, Chen was a reporter and anchor (1985-91) at WXIA-TV Atlanta, where she covered the 1988 Democratic National Convention, Hurricane Hugo and the Cuban riots at the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary. During that period, she also reported for USA Today's television program. Chen began her broadcast journalism career as a reporter for WCIV-TV Charleston, S.C. (1983-85).

She was born on Aug. 28, 1961, in Chicago and was graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree (1982) and a master's degree (1983) in journalism. She will relocate with her husband and son to the Washington, D.C. area.
