VANESSA WILLIAMS, ROCKMOND DUNBAR AND DARRIN DeWITT HENSON TO DIRECT SHORT FILM TRILOGY
New York, NY, February 24, 2003 -- Continuing its tradition of giving actors their first opportunity to be behind the camera, Showtime Networks Inc. has greenlit a trilogy of shorts to be directed by its SOUL FOOD series stars Vanessa Williams ("New Jack City"and SHOWTIME's OUR AMERICA), Rockmond Dunbar ("Love The Way," "Punks") and Darrin DeWitt Henson ("Darrin's Dance Grooves.") The actors of SHOWTIME's hit series will each have the creative freedom to direct a 30-minute film of his or her choice.
Production is slated to begin in mid-February and SHOWTIME hopes to air the trilogy as a lead-in for the fifth season premiere of SOUL FOOD in 2004. Carol Shine ("Punks," SHOWTIME'S LETTER TO MY MOTHER and MILK AND HONEY) will serve as executive producer. Showtime Networks is fully financing these short films.
Over the years, Showtime Networks has given numerous actors a chance to direct their first films, both shorts and feature-length projects. They include: Danny Glover, Tom Cruise, Kiefer Sutherland, Jon Voight, Kevin Bacon, Christine Lahti, Laura Dern, Mary Stuart Masterson, Helen Mirren, Anne Heche and Salma Hayek, to name a few.
DENSE
Vanessa Williams directs a film about a woman who discovers that her long-term lover has been involved with another woman since the inception of their relationship. Vondie Curtis Hall ("Chicago Hope," SHOWTIME'S SIRENS), Lanai Chapman ("Rat Race"), Yolonda Ross ("Stranger Inside") and Michael Ralph ("The Bernie Mac Show") will star.
THE GREAT COMMISSION
Directed by Rockmond Dunbar, this film is about a prostitute who believes she is doing the work of God. It stars Obba Babatunde ("Introducing Dorothy Dandridge," SHOWTIME'S SOUL FOOD) and Joe Torry ("Poetic Justice," "Flamingo Rising").
VIOLATION
Darrin DeWitt Henson directs a film which tells the story of two Gulf War veterans whose relationship may be jeopardized by their opposing views on war. The film stars Malik Yoba ("NY Undercover") and Cynda Williams ("Mo Better Blues, "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge").
