Katja Herbers

 

     After her international success in The Netherlands and Europe, Katja Herbers continues to deliver powerful performances in the US with her diverse and emotionally-driven characters.

     Herbers recently wrapped production for season two of the acclaimed CBS series “Evil.” The show follows a skeptical female clinical psychologist (Herbers) as she joins a priest-in-training and a blue-collar contractor as they investigate supposed miracles, demonic possession, and other extraordinary occurrences. The series, which released in September of 2019, garnered rave reviews, noting Herbers’ role as “a star-making performance.” Herbers also received a Critics Choice Super Award nomination in the category of “Best Actress in a Horror Series” for her role, as well as a spot on TV GUIDE’s “Best TV Performances of 2020” list. Season two is set to premiere on June 20, 2021 on the new Paramount+ platform.

     Herbers can be seen as the lead in Ivo Van Aart’s Dutch comedy horror “The Columnist.” The film first premiered out of the 2020 Fantasia Festival, where it had its North American premiere, and at FrightFest in the UK. The film follows Femke Boot (Herbers), a columnist and author who decides to take revenge after being flooded with anonymous nasty messages and death threats on social media. Critics cited Herbers’ performance as “magnetic” and “delightfully unhinged.” The film released in the UK on March 12, 2021 and in the US on May 7, 2021 by Film Movement.

     Herbers’ past film credits include Jelle de Jonge’s “Weg van Jou;” Mark de Cloe’s “Mannenharten” and “Mannenharten 2;” Chris W. Mitchell’s “The Pool;” Ineke Houtman’s “Those Were the Days” and “My Granpa, the Bankrobber;” Anna van der Heide’s “Brammetje Baas;” Rudolf van den Berg’s “Süskind;” Maria Peters’ “Sonny Boy;” Antoinette Beumer’s “Loft;”Ben Sombogaart’s “The Storm;” Dave Schram’s “Timboektoe;” and Boudewijn Koole’s “Drawn Out Love.”

     With over twenty roles in television, her recent credits include her role as Emily in Season 2 and 3 of HBO’s Golden Globe Nominated series, “Westworld,” opposite Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, Thandie Newton and Ed Harris, Discovery Channel’s “Manhunt: Unabomber;” HBO’s “The Leftovers;” RTL Entertainment’s “Divorce;” WGN America’s “Manhattan;” and FX’s “The Americans.”

     Prior to breaking into film and television, Herbers was active in theater. Her credits include Joseph Roths’ “Hotel Savory,” Alvis Hermanis directing Maxim Gorki’s “Wassa,” and Stephan Kimmig’s “Platform,” the latter was awarded best theatre play of the season with Herbers as the lead.  Coming from a family of classical musicians, Herbers is also a singer, and has performed “Im wunderschonen Monat Mai” – a composition inspired by the Schubert and Schumann songs by Reinbert de Leeuw.

     Herbers attended the Ignatius Gymnasium in Amsterdam and studied psychology at the University of Amsterdam. During her psychology studies she attended the local theatre school De Trap. She moved to New York and went to the HB Studio and went to attend Theater school in Amsterdam. During her studies, she starred in the films “Peter Bell” and “Brush with Fate.”

     After graduation, Herbers became a member of Johan Simons's Theater Company NTGent in Ghent. She then joined the renowned Munich Kammerspiele in Germany. She worked with directors such as Alex van Warmerdam, Ivo van Hove and Theu Boermans under whose direction she performed many Schnitzler plays, including his monologue “Fräulein Else.” She played the lead role in Van Hove’s feature film “Amsterdam,” co-starring Marisa Tomei and was the lead in Boermans’ “The Chosen,” which won the prestigious Prix de l’Europe and an International Emmy Award.  In 2013, she won the Guido de Moor Award for young talent, for her portrayal of ‘Irina’ in Chekhov's “Three Sisters.”

     Born and raised in The Netherlands, Herbers divides her time between Los Angeles, New York and Amsterdam.
