New CBS-Owned Station Includes Launch of CBS News Atlanta Streaming Channel, Providing Around-the-Clock Weather, Traffic, Local and Breaking News Coverage for Regional Viewers
NEW YORK, June 2, 2025 – CBS announces that WUPA Channel 69 will become the new CBS Network outlet in Atlanta, delivering CBS’ leading entertainment, news and sports programming beginning on Aug. 16. The move is part of CBS’ long-term strategic efforts to leverage the full power of the CBS stations portfolio and local assets across major markets in the U.S. in service of the public interest, delivering the highest-quality local news and culture-defining content to the seventh-largest DMA in the country with 2.8 million TV households. CBS has owned and operated WUPA in the region, most recently as an independent station, since 1994.
WUPA will now be branded as CBS Atlanta and include the upcoming launch of the CBS News Atlanta streaming channel, a comprehensive news experience that will keep the Atlanta community updated on the latest regional weather, traffic, local and breaking news. CBS is committed to local journalism and serving the Atlanta community, with exceptional experience as the owner and operator of 27 stations in 17 of the country’s biggest markets.
“Launching our first owned CBS station in Atlanta is a milestone moment for us,” said Jennifer Mitchell, president of CBS Stations and CBS News and Stations Digital. “This expansion allows us to bring the full strength of CBS’ award-winning news, sports and entertainment programming directly to one of the most vibrant and influential markets in the country. With WUPA and the launch of the CBS News Atlanta streaming channel, we’re not just delivering content – we’re investing in the community, local journalism and ensuring Atlanta viewers receive the same trusted, high-quality journalism that defines CBS in every market we serve.”
WUPA’s live linear feed will also be available on Paramount+, in addition to an expansive slate of original series, hit shows and movies from Paramount Global’s portfolio of popular brands.
CBS is America’s Most-Watched Network for a record-breaking 17th consecutive season and consistently delivers the top shows on television, including TRACKER, MATLOCK, 60 MINUTES, FBI, GEORGIE AND MANDY’S FIRST MARRIAGE, GHOSTS, NCIS and ELSBETH. CBS is also home to the biggest marquee sports properties and championship events across the NFL, Big Ten Football and Basketball, March Madness, the Masters, PGA Tour and National Women’s Soccer League, driving massive viewership and excitement as the pinnacle of appointment viewing. The NFL ON CBS this season will air three Atlanta Falcons games, beginning with Washington at Atlanta Week 4.
The Company continues to invest in enhanced offerings, including community journalism, innovative formats like augmented- and virtual-reality technology-driven studios and super-serving viewers with additional live news hours. CBS was the first major media company to launch a localized OTT news service for digital audiences, becoming a leader in streaming across its 14 owned CBS Stations markets. The platform has continued to grow with streaming extensions in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, San Francisco Bay Area, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Denver, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Sacramento, Baltimore and Detroit. CBS Stations also has strong partnerships with regional teams across the major sporting leagues, including the NFL, MLB and WNBA – giving local audiences special access to home team games, stories and fan-favorite athletes.
CBS will launch a multi-media awareness campaign for Atlanta viewers this summer to ensure that the communities WUPA serves are well informed about the news and sports offerings and how to access them.
