CBS News’ investigative series into medical billing and testing have earned two Sigma Delta Chi Awards for excellence in journalism presented by the Society of Professional Journalists.

“Medical Price Roulette” earned the Public Service in Television Journalism (Network/Syndication Service/Program Service) award. A ten-month series of reports by National Consumer and Investigative Correspondent Anna Werner, “Medical Price Roulette” explored the lack of medical price transparency among providers, hospitals and insurance companies, as well as the human costs of this entirely opaque pricing system. The project, designed to be interactive with viewers, was done in a unique collaboration with journalism company ClearHealthCosts. Kim Godwin and Diana Miller are the executive producers. Peter Burgess and Alturo Rhymes are the senior producers. Wendy Krantz, Nicole Busch, Erin Rosenblum and Nicole Keller are the producers, along with Jeanne Pinder of ClearHealthCosts.

“Medicare Fraud Uncovered” earned the Investigative Reporting (Network/Syndication Service/Program Service) award. “Medicare Fraud Uncovered,” reported by Chief Investigative and Senior National Correspondent Jim Axelrod, featured an investigation into a genetic testing scheme that used recruiters to get seniors on Medicare to undergo a test to measure their future cancer risks. Often times the test results never arrived. The test, the senior citizens were told, would be covered by Medicare, only to then be billed thousands of dollars. Diana Miller and Kim Godwin are the executive producers. Peter Burgess, Michael Rey and Len Tepper are the senior producers. Michael Kaplan is the producer. Cassidy McDonald is the associate producer.

The Sigma Delta Chi awards recognize outstanding work published or broadcast in 2019.
