The Beatles! Backstage and Behind the Scenes A Traveling Exhibition from the Archives of CBS Television and LIFE Photographer, Bill Eppridge Holds its U.S. Premiere this Summer in Miami Beach May 25 to September 2, 2002
MIAMI BEACH (May 1, 2002): Thirty-eight years later, The Beatles are coming back to the beach -- South Beach! From May 25 through September 2, 2002, The Beatles! Backstage and Behind the Scenes, a traveling exhibition from the archives of CBS Television and LIFE photographer, Bill Eppridge, will make its American debut in South Beach at 10th Street & Ocean Drive. The event kicks off the city's TropicoolTM Festival Season, a series of more than 60 cultural events generating excitement this summer.
The event also marks the first locale of The Beatles! Backstage and Behind the Scenes American tour. The CBS Photo Archive traveling exhibition will anchor tourism events in major cities nationwide, celebrating the Beatles first tour and marking collaborations between the CBS Photo Archive and major municipal tourism efforts nationwide.
"We're very excited to have the Fab Four back in spirit in one of their favorite destinations," said William Talbert, president & CEO of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB). "It's been 38 years since they performed live on the Ed Sullivan Show from Miami Beach and we're delighted that the CBS Photo Archives agreed to kick off and stay throughout our summer festival season with the exhibit's U.S. premiere. It's a great time of year to draw more visitors and boost business."
The exhibition, "The Beatles! Backstage and Behind the Scenes" was curated by John Filo, Director of Photo Operations at CBS. Filo is a former photo editor for Newsweek and deputy picture editor of Sports Illustrated. Filo won the 1971 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for one of the most compelling images of the Vietnam era -- the teenage girl kneeling over the body of a Kent State student who had been shot and killed by the Ohio National Guard. "The Beatles first American tour included Miami," said John Filo, "Therefore, this was the most natural locale to begin the American tour of The Beatles! Backstage and Behind the Scenes.
Images from the unpublished archives of award wining photojournalist, Bill Eppridge depict The Beatles, young, exuberant and the crush of fans, always upbeat, witty and attractive, who dreamt of becoming part of the Beatles' evolving story. "I wasn't much older than the Beatles when given this assignment, " remembers photographer Bill Eppridge of the Beatles' first leg of their first American tour. "We were all just kids caught up in a socio-happening that was beyond our control. I shot photographs, they shot quips, and history shot us all into the record books." Eppridge's unforgettable photos also appeared in LIFE magazine and initiated the very first Magical Mystery Tour.
The opening of this exhibition also marks a new opportunity for consumers to purchase rare, collectible photographs from the CBS Photo Archive. Images taken by CBS photographers in the exhibition, "The Beatles! Backstage and Behind the Scenes" represents a sampling of over 30 million memorable images contained in the CBS Entertainment Archives dating back as far as 1928, when CBS first began broadcasting as a radio network and records those entertainers and personalities that have come into our homes over the past seventy years. "The CBS Photo Archive offers more than a window on our industry's past. It is a mirror on our collective memory as it spans more than 70 years of our nation's cultural and political history," notes CBS senior vice president of communications, Gil Schwartz. "We see the names and faces that have helped shape who we are, and who we'll be, personalities and events that should not be lost in the amnesia of our culture."
