PGA TOUR -- SANCTIONED EVENT PLAYED AT GRAYHAWK
CBS Sports to air New Year's Day 2005
Scottsdale, Arizona -- The inaugural Tommy Bahama Challenge, airing on CBS Sports 2-4 p.m. EST on Jan. 1, 2005, pits a four-man team of the best USA players age 30-and-under captained by Gary McCord against a team of young International stars captained by David Feherty, including five members of the 2004 Ryder Cup sides.
The Tommy Bahama Challenge, played at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., is the only PGA TOUR Challenge Season event aired by CBS Sports and it comes on a day when the households in use (HUT levels) typically are the highest of the year.
"Consistent with the image of our title sponsor, we wanted the event to have a healthy disregard of the conventional," said event co-creator Terry Jastrow, president of Jastrow Productions. "In personality and execution, this is not your father's golf event or telecast."
McCord for Team USA and Feherty for the International Team both said they would win, while at the same time making a rather large and public side bet on the outcome. Taunting has been promised when the competition tightens down the stretch.
Chad Campbell, Zach Johnson, Hank Kuehne and Chris Riley of the PGA TOUR represent the USA against the International team of European PGA TOUR players Paul Casey, David Howell, Ian Poulter and South Korean-born Kevin Na, the youngest member of the PGA TOUR. Campbell, Riley, Casey, Howell and Poulter met in September at the Ryder Cup where each won at least one point in his debut appearance.
The winning team equally divides $400,000 of the $700,000 purse with the low individual scorer receiving a 2005 Mercedes and a $20,000 bonus. Ties are decided by an alternate shot match between the teams and a closest-to-the-pin shootout in the event of a tie for low score.
"I know everyone involved had a great time," said Poulter. "This was really done right and not just as an inaugural event. I think when people watch this they'll see and appreciate what a great event this is. It has a terrific future."
