CBSN ORIGINALS DOCUMENTARY EXAMINES THE COMPLEXITIES OF THE STUDENT DEBT CRISIS IN AMERICA

The Student Debt Dilemma” Is Streaming Now Across CBS News’ Digital Properties

March 25, 2021 — As the cost of higher education continues to rise, the newest CBSN Originals documentary examines the risks and rewards of a college education and the growing calls to address the “quiet crisis” of student debt.

“The Student Debt Dilemma” features first-person perspectives on the crushing weight of student loans and digs deep into what could or should be done to alleviate the debt burden. The documentary also examines the historical origins of student loans and the racial disparities in student loan debt.

Seth Frotman, Executive Director, Student Borrower Protection Center, disputes the idea that student debt is a “young person millennial issue,” saying, “This really touches every facet of American lives... individuals, their communities, our economy and our country.”

“The Student Debt Dilemma” is available now across all CBS News Digital properties. The documentary will also stream live on CBSN on Sunday, March 28 at 8pm ET.

CBSN Originals documentaries, launched in January 2016, deliver immersive reports that take a deep dive into some of the key issues driving national and global conversations. To date, CBSN has streamed 75 Originals on a range of topics including the spread of conspiracy theories like QAnon, coronavirus in Navajo Nation, social media’s role in the violence against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar, gender identity, and the dangerous journey to America through the Darien Gap, among others.

“The Student Debt Dilemma” is the fourth episode in the third season of the CBSN Originals series “Speaking Frankly,” which dives into the cultural conversations that society as a whole has grappled with in the modern era. In 2021, America is at the center of a clash between fundamentally different visions of who we are as a nation. This season of Speaking Frankly examines the arguments -- as well as the double-speak, hypocrisies and contradictions -- emerging from all corners.
