60 MINUTES: “Critical Condition” – Scott Pelley reported on small business owners and laid off workers in the early weeks of the coronavirus pandemic at a time when many cities across the country had shut down all businesses besides those deemed essential. The report showed that unemployment was much higher than official numbers. The report featured workers who couldn’t even get through to state unemployment call centers and websites, which were overwhelmed by the flood of incoming claims. There were also stories of resilience in those early weeks. 60 MINUTES featured a shuttered design company now making PPE face shields, a laid off waitress making sanitizer for neighbors in need and restaurants sending meals to exhausted hospital workers. Bill Owens is the executive producer. Tanya Simon the executive editor. Nicole Young, Katie Kerbstat Jacobson and Aaron Weisz the producers. Warren Lustig the editor. Ian Flickinger is the broadcast associate. Watch it HERE.
The Wilbur Awards will be presented during a virtual ceremony held April 9.
