CBS News presents ASIAN AMERICANS: BATTLING BIAS, a new original half-hour documentary exploring the rise in discrimination against Asian Americans due to geographic origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. The documentary will feature poignant and timely interviews about the pandemic’s effects on Asian American communities, as well as the toll taken by demonizing rhetoric from President Trump and his administration. Featuring reporting from CBS News White House correspondent Weijia Jiang, CBSN anchor Elaine Quijano, and CBS News correspondents Nancy Chen and Michael George, the special will stream live on CBSN, CBS News’ 24/7 digital streaming news service, on Friday, Oct. 9 (8:00 PM, ET/PT).

The documentary draws from the strength of CBS News’ reporting on the intersections of race and health disparities due to COVID-19. Among the storylines in the documentary are interviews that illuminate the toll the pandemic has taken on families and small businesses; how President Trump’s rhetoric may have an influence in the rise of hate crimes against Asian Americans; how this year’s social justice protests have allowed Asian Americans to find common ground with the Black Lives Matter movement over the shared experience of discrimination; and the populations of Asian Americans across the country that could have a big effect on the presidential election.

All of the on-air reporters and story producers of the special are CBS News staff of Asian American descent. This is the second original documentary from CBS News’ Race & Culture Unit following the premiere of THE POWER OF AUGUST, an hour-long special looking back at transformational moments in American civil rights history that happened in the month of August. ASIAN AMERICANS: BATTLING BIAS can be seen on CBS Village, the newly launched cross-platform franchise about diverse communities featuring reporting across the CBS News broadcast shows and CBS News Digital.
