CBSN ORIGINALS EXPLORES THE SPREAD OF PSEUDOSCIENCE

The War on Science” Available Now Across CBS News’ Digital Properties

March 6, 2020 - CBSN, CBS News’ free 24/7 streaming news service, debuts its newest original documentary, “The War on Science,” which explores the impact that the Internet has had on spreading pseudoscience and conspiracy theories to the masses. From the flat earth movement, to challenging the veracity of evolution, to denying climate change, the spread of unfounded ideas is influencing Americans of all ages, and there are concerns that these ideas are making their way into the classroom.

In the latest episode of the CBSN Originals series, REVERB, Adam Yamaguchi travels to the third annual Flat Earth Conference in Dallas, Texas and then to schools in Oklahoma to see how teachers are navigating today’s ‘post-truth’ era. Asked by Yamaguchi if it’s equitable to teach both sides in a science classroom - most commonly creationism and evolution - Ann Reid, Executive Director of the non-profit advocacy group National Center for Science Education, states, The problem is when it's set up as both sides, as if there are two scientific sides, when there aren't...saying we want to teach both sides, we want to teach the side that's supported by science and the side that's not supported by science, in a science classroom, just doesn't make any sense.”

The War on Science” is the third episode in CBSN’s second six-part documentary series “REVERB.” Throughout the series, CBSN correspondent Adam Yamaguchi will take the audience on a journey around the world, exposing the ripple effects of events or trends that the daily news cycle often doesn’t. This season, the series also examines issues such as the impact of climate change in Miami and the hidden drivers of deforestation in the Amazon.

The documentary is available now across all CBS News digital properties including CBSN, CBS News’ 24/7 streaming network. The documentary will also stream on CBSN on Sunday, March 8 at 8 p.m. ET.

CBSN launched its documentary series, CBSN Originals, in January 2016, adding a new dimension to the network with immersive reports that take a deep dive into some of the key issues driving national and global conversations. CBSN has now streamed 53 Originals on a range of topics including the mass migration from Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, social media’s role in the violence against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar, gender identity, and the dangerous journey to America through the Darien Gap, among others.
