Award-winning journalist Jay Shaylor is joining CBS News as executive producer of the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH NORAH O’DONNELL, it was announced today by Susan Zirinsky, CBS News President and Senior Executive Producer. His appointment begins next month.
Shaylor, an Emmy, Peabody and Murrow Award-winning journalist, will lead the venerable CBS News broadcast at a historic juncture with O’Donnell in the anchor chair. The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH NORAH O’DONNELL will move to its permanent home in Washington, D.C., later this fall, adding to the importance and stature of the broadcast and giving O’Donnell and CBS News journalists unique access to cover critical issues that affect all Americans. Shaylor brings with him nearly two decades of newsgathering expertise and editorial leadership.
“Jay is the right person at the right time to lead this important CBS News franchise,” Zirinsky said. “We are building a broadcast that is focused on thoughtful reporting with impact and depth and are thrilled to have an executive producer who shares our collective passion for journalism.”
“Jay is an innovative producer who brings experience and energy to the team,” said O’Donnell, anchor and managing editor of the broadcast. “I look forward to partnering with him as we continue to build the CBS EVENING NEWS for the future and begin a new chapter of this broadcast’s storied history in Washington.”
“CBS invented the evening newscast, and Norah and Susan are revolutionizing it,” Shaylor said. “I am ecstatic about joining them and the dedicated and brilliant team of journalists at the CBS EVENING NEWS as the broadcast moves to Washington later this year.”
Shaylor comes to CBS News from CNN, where since 2013, he has been executive producer of “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer,” CNN’s flagship two-hour daily newscast covering breaking news, national security, international events and politics. Shaylor has been at the helm in the control room leading live coverage of many of the biggest breaking news stories of the last six years—from the San Bernardino terror attacks to the firing of James Comey. In addition to supervising daily coverage and breaking news, he was part of the team that produced CNN’s election nights and special events. During his tenure, his team was nominated for seven Emmys.
Before joining CNN, Shaylor was the senior producer of ABC’s “Good Morning America” overseeing editorial content and production of the broadcast during the evening and overnight hours. In 2012, Shaylor was part of the senior team responsible for moving “Good Morning America” into first place—ending NBC’s 16-year winning streak in the morning. At ABC News, Shaylor also served as one of Diane Sawyer’s anchor producers, produced investigative and spot news stories, and was “Good Morning America’s” primary producer in the field during breaking news.
Shaylor holds a Master of Science with honors from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism where he was awarded a Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in American history from the University of Virginia. He currently resides in Washington, D.C. with his wife and two children.
The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH NORAH O’DONNELL launched July 15 under the direction of Kimberly Godwin, CBS News’ Executive Vice President of News, who has helped position the broadcast’s editorial focus on breaking news, original reporting and hard-hitting investigative journalism. Since taking the helm as anchor and managing editor, O’Donnell has reported from the scene of major news stories including along the Texas border, where she conducted an exclusive interview with the acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. She covered the aftermath of the recent mass shootings from El Paso and was the only network evening news anchor to report from Florida and the Bahamas during Hurricane Dorian.
