NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION REPRESENTATIVE TELLS “CBS SUNDAY MORNING” AMERICANS SHOULD HAVE THE CHOICE OF DEFENDING THEMSELVES WITH GUNS
Sandy Froman Tells Rita Braver: “If You Have a Choice of Using Your Own Gun to Save Your Life or Having Your Life Taken; Then Yes, I Think You Should Have That Choice”

Americans should have the choice of defending themselves using guns if they want, National Rifle Association board member Sandy Froman tells Rita Braver in an interview for CBS SUNDAY MORNING to be broadcast March 13 (9:00 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network. Braver’s interview with Froman is part of CBS SUNDAY MORNING’s special edition “Guns and America,” which looks at the role of firearms in the country from a variety of points of view.
Froman, a past president of the NRA, maintains the country would be safer if more law abiding citizens owned and were trained to use guns. Indeed, NRA CEO and Executive Vice President, Wayne LaPierre has argued “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”
But could a good guy with a gun stop a terrorist attack?
“I think a good guy with a gun could protect himself or herself,” Froman tells Braver. “If you have a choice of using your gun to save your life or having your life taken, then, yes, I think you should have your that choice.”
Braver also explores the controversial question of whether the country would be safer if more people – rather than fewer – carried guns. Braver talks with former CNN anchor Lynne Russell and her husband, former CNN reporter Chuck De Caro, gun owners who were involved in a hotel room shootout with an intruder that left De Caro wounded and the assailant dead. They both credit the Second Amendment – and their right to bear arms – with saving their lives, but believe this is ultimately not a political decision but a personal one.
“I don’t tell anybody, go out and get a gun,” Russell says. “I don’t… But if you’re going to, you should be very well-trained.”
CBS SUNDAY MORNING is broadcast Sundays (9:00-10:30 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network. Rand Morrison is the executive producer.
