Barbara Smith, known as B. Smith, was one of the first African-American models on the cover of Mademoiselle magazine. In 1986, she opened her first restaurant in New York City, and two more followed. She also hosted a television program and was a sought-after guest for her knowledge of food and style.

In tonight’s interview with CBS News Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook, Smith, 64, said she wanted to reveal her Alzheimer's diagnosis to remove the stigma and shame associated with the incurable disease.

Though her symptoms have progressed, Smith continues to have the same positive outlook that helped make her famous.

“I think the future's going to be fine,” Smith told LaPook. “I'm going to do my best to make it work out for me and for as many people that I can possibly help, too.”

More of LaPook’s interview with Smith will be broadcast on an upcoming edition of CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH CHARLES OSGOOD (9:00 AM, ET). She tells LaPook that she tried to hide the symptoms from her family and would wait years before she would receive a diagnosis. LaPook will also speak with Dan Gasby, her husband and business partner, and neurologist, Dr. Martin Goldstein of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

Rand Morrison is the Executive Producer of CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH CHARLES OSGOOD.
