ONE MAN'S FIGHT AGAINST HIS OWN CANCER MAY RESULT IN A SIDE EFFECT-FREE TREATMENT FOR ALL CANCER VICTIMS -- "60 MINUTES"

John Kanzius fought his leukemia head on, inventing a machine that may someday offer effective treatment for cancers without the debilitating side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.   Lesley Stahl followed the retired radio technician on his inspiring quest to kill the leukemia ravaging his body and spirit with a radio wave machine he made in his garage - a device that could be a cancer breakthrough. Stahl's report will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES Sunday, Oct. 18 (7:00-8:00PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television network.

"I think we're going to have an effective treatment and hopefully a treatment that is minimally toxic to patients unlike most of the treatments we now have," says liver cancer surgeon and researcher Dr. Steven Curley.   Curley says that when he put specially treated colon and pancreatic cancer cells into Kanzius' machine, the deadly cells were "100 percent killed."

Curley thinks the machine can be ready for clinical trials on humans in about four years. "I promised John we were going to get this treatment to human clinical trials.  We are going to succeed," he tells Stahl.    Click here to view an excerpt.
