"CBS EVENING NEWS" FINISHES THE WEEK IN A VIRTUAL TIE
FOR SECOND PLACE IN HOUSEHOLDS AND CUTS THE GAP WITH NBC'S "NIGHTLY NEWS" BY MORE THAN HALF AND BY 1.2 MILLION VIEWERS

THE "CBS EVENING NEWS" IS THE ONLY NETWORK EVENING NEWSCAST
TO INCREASE FOR THE WEEK AND SEASON-TO-DATE
IN VIEWERS AND HOUSEHOLDS

The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH BOB SCHIEFFER finished second in viewers for the week of May 8, beating ABC's "World News Tonight" for the first time since the week ending Aug. 3, 2001. The CBS EVENING NEWS also narrowed the gap with NBC's "Nightly News" by 1.2 million viewers compared to the same week last year. In households, the CBS EVENING NEWS has virtually tied "World News Tonight," cutting the gap 90% to -0.1 of a ratings point compared to a -1.0 rating point differential for the same week last year. The CBS EVENING NEWS also more than halved the gap with "Nightly News" to -0.8 rating point compared to -1.7 for the same period last year. The CBS EVENING NEWS is also the only network evening newscast to post year-to-year and season-to-date gains in total viewers and households compared to the same period last year.

"I continue to stress with our team that if you put on a better show day in and day out, our ratings will increase," said Sean McManus, President, CBS News and Sports. "That is what I believe is happening here."

For the week of May 8, the CBS EVENING NEWS increased its total viewers by +850,000 (7.39 million from 6.54 million) and increased +9% in households (5.1/11 from 4.7/10). During the same period, NBC lost -350,000 viewers (8.41 million from 8.76 million) and decreased -8% in households (5.9/12 from 6.4/14), while ABC's "World News Tonight" lost -680,000 viewers (7.31 million from 7.99 million) and decreased -9% in households (5.2/11 from 5.7/12).

The CBS EVENING NEWS has increased its total viewers in more weeks than any other evening newscast during the 2005-06 television season:

• The CBS EVENING NEWS is up in 25 of 34 weeks this season;
• NBC's "Nightly News" is down in 32 of 34 weeks;
• ABC's "World News Tonight" is down in 32 of 34 weeks and the last 31 weeks straight.

In the adults 25-54 demo for the week, the CBS EVENING NEWS is the only broadcast to post a gain, compared to the same week last year. CBS increased +12% (1.9/8 from 1.7/7), while NBC lost -4% (2.2/9 from 2.3/10) and ABC lost -5% (2.1/9 from 2.2/9).

Season-to-date, the CBS EVENING NEWS increased its total viewers by +280,000 (7.59 million from 7.31 million) and increased +2% in households (5.3/10 from 5.2/10), while NBC and ABC
decreased in total viewers and households compared to the same period last year. NBC's "Nightly News" lost -680,000 total viewers (9.52 million from 10.20 million) and decreased -8% in households (6.6/13 from 7.2/14). ABC's "World News Tonight" also showed season-to-date losses: it lost -940,000 total viewers (8.50 million from 9.44 million) and decreased -11% (5.9/12 from 6.6/13) in households.
