CBS NEWS IS HONORED WITH SEVEN 2002 RTNDA EDWARD R. MURROW AWARDS
?
CBS News has been honored with seven Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) Edward R. Murrow Awards for excellence in electronic journalism: 60 MINUTES II, CBS NEWS SUNDAY MORNING and CBS News Correspondent Steve Hartman each received one award and CBS Radio News received four awards.
?Investigative Reporting -- 60 MINUTES II: "Merchants of Destruction," an investigative look into Pakistan's black market where weapons of mass destruction are bought and sold. The broadcast was reported by correspondent Bob Simon and produced by George Crile.
?Feature Reporting -- CBS NEWS SUNDAY MORNING anchor Charles Osgood took a first-hand look into the art of crossword puzzles and those who master them by visiting the 2001 American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. The broadcast was produced by Jason Sacca.
?Writing -- Steve Hartman travels to whatever location his dart dictates on a map, picks a person at random out of a local telephone book and tells his/her story for "Everybody Has A Story," a feature broadcast on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH DAN RATHER and THE EARLY SHOW. This is Hartman's second Murrow Award for these features.
?Overall Excellence -- CBS Radio News coverage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on America. This is the second year in a row CBS Radio News has been recognized in this category.
?Best Continuing Coverage -- Moments after the first plane hit the World Trade Center on 9-11, CBS Radio News reported "compelling, composed reports in the hours after the story broke, followed by complete, comprehensive coverage of subsequent events," according to the judging committee. Among the journalists recognized for their reporting are Pamela McCall, Cami McCormick, Kimberly Dozier and Lara Logan. This is the third year in a row CBS Radio News has been recognized in this category.
?Best New Series -- The 15-part series "One Month Later: The Change in Us" looked at how Americans across the country dealt with the attacks.
