Lili Reinhart on Doing Her Makeup In The Dark When She Was Younger and Starting Her Skincare Line Personal Day After Struggling with Acne

Lili: Thanks for having me in this very intimate setting as well.

Drew: We're starting a new series called Personal Space.

Lili: Oh, my brand is called Personal Day.

Drew: I know very well because I have mentioned to you when I would look at sales reports, of your brand that are amazing.

Lili: I'm really lucky. I feel really proud of it, and it is one of those things where I'm, I really just hope it keeps going. It's still a baby we launched in 2024, but I have so much faith in it and so much love goes into all of it because I am and was a true acne sufferer, and that's sort of, the skin care line's for everyone, but that's who we're catering to because I didn't have solutions. I just felt so, I was just thinking like I was looking in the mirror, putting like an earring in and I was remembering to when I was, I was like in 7th grade and I would do my makeup in the dark because I didn't want to see my face up close like in harsh lighting because my skin looked so bad. I mean it was the worst. I felt a lot of shame around it and I'm so glad and that was 10 years ago and I think it's a, I truly think it is a little bit different now. I think the popularity of pimple patches has really helped the shame of it.

Drew: It's so meaningful. Is that, something that you are doing?

Lili: We have a pimple patch.

Drew: You do. OK, so I'm very glad how open people are about their skin.

Lili: People are very honest right now.

Drew: Did you have anyone that you saw that was a little door opening or a human being that became a momentary figure?

Lili: I do recall, you know, being 18 and thinking that Demi Lovato was the only person I knew that was a celebrity that I knew that really spoke about I don't know what it was in particular, maybe depression and anxiety and so when I started doing it and people started really taking to the fact that I was doing it, I was surprised by that. I think I didn't understand, because I never had, you know, a PR meeting where I was like, ‘Oh I'm going to talk about mental health all the time.’ I just sort of just started doing it because it was a natural part of who I am and my experience as a person and so when you're being interviewed however many times eventually and people are asking me how I am and what's going on in my life, I'm not going to be able to hide that I have these certain things, and so I just started talking about them and people were fascinated with it and I think they were fascinated with it because I was really young talking about it and I think I was on a TV show on the CW where everyone's supposed to be hot and perfect and I was not so I was kind of raising my hand and saying, ‘That's not me’ and people responded really well to that, and I think that's why I've been able to be, I don't know, in a lot of conversations about mental health over the last 10 years, which I just never would have thought.

Drew: And you've been encouraged.

Drew: I have to say I love what you are doing with your rom-com dresses right now. I’m so on this journey. I’m so here for it. One funny enough is an ‘Ever After’ dress…it is so beautiful.

Lili: Well thank you. This was created, this was a custom Rodarte ‘Ever After’ dress.

Drew: They’re so cool those girls.

Lili: They are and we really wanted to, my stylist and I, we wanted to do something fun for this movie. I really felt that this movie reignited my love of rom-coms and romance that I grew up watching and there are so many iconic characters and outfits in movies from the 90’s and 00’s that I grew up watching and I had ‘Ever After’ on VHS and I watched it all the time and so we just wanted to in a small little way have fun and pay homage to people like you who have done these iconic movies and worn these things that people remember and think about and they’re like, ‘Oh my god that dress,’ and sort of have a tribute to those moments.

Lili on Making Sure the Film Version of “The Love Hypothesis” Stayed True to the Book

Drew: What kind of guided you or inspired you to say like, here's what we have to stay true to here this is what people are really loving about this.

Lili: I had seen, well, people love every ounce of the book, so it's hard because I'm like, well, first of all, the script was written and I was as an EP was brought on, was able to sort of have, you know, a little bit of influence there and with all of herself, but I think just making sure like little lines here and there, if we could include those little lines that fans can remember and note, that was important and so I pushed for little things like that and, for certain things to happen between Olive and Adam, like even little, little baby things, little baby moments, kind of them always, you know, looking at each other. They don't know how to put their bodies around one another. The sex scene was really important to get right because that's what, that's why a lot of people read the book, so it had to be.

Drew: I mean, it's two chapters of the book.

Lili: It's two chapters of the book.

Drew: That is some tantric sex. Did you hear that, Dougie?

Lili: He popped up for that word. But I enjoy, I didn't not enjoy it.

Drew: God, that sounds nice.

Lili: You need to read the two chapters.
