MY MILLION DOLLAR INVENTION: SHOCK & AWE - Premiere: Sunday, June 14 at 8 p.m. ET/PT - Rollercoaster, Sandusky Ohio from My Million Dollar Invention: Shock & Awe. - The series kicks off with the stories of four men whose inventions shocked the world: the Ouija Board, dynamite, the electric chair and roller coasters. "Talking Boards" were an uncanny pastime that gripped a mourning nation after the Civil War, until a Baltimore fertilizer salesman named Charles Kennard devised a way to mass market the idea of communicating with the "other side." Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, spurred by the death of his brother to find a safer, less volatile explosive, ushered in the industrial age of mining and railroads with the invention of dynamite. The electric chair is borne out of a hanging gone wrong and the need for a humane execution method, and involves a much larger story of two great rivals and innovation giants--Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse -- and their competition over whose electrical system would power America, AC or DC. The thrill of rollercoasters was brought to us in the 1880s by a religious underwear manufacturer, LaMarcus Thompson, who was looking to give people wholesome entertainment. - Photo: Courtesy of Smithsonian Channel Copyright: 2015 - Million_Dollar_Invention/SmithsonianChannel_MDI_SA_23

MUMMIES ALIVE: THE GUNSLINGER MUMMY - Premieres Sunday, June 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. This mummy has been on display at a Seattle curiosity shop since the 1950s. According to one legend, he was an American Wild West cowboy, killed 120 years ago in a saloon shootout. He's got what appears to be a bullet hole in his stomach, but using CT imaging technology and state-of-the-art virtual autopsy techniques, investigators piece together a new and surprising story; one involving a notorious con man, the sideshow circuit, and a lesson on how to turn a buck using the myth of the Old West. - Photo: Courtesy of Smithsonian Channel Copyright: 2015 - SmithsonianChannel_MA_E3_E2
