Gene Steratore

Former National Football League and NCAA basketball referee Gene Steratore joined CBS Sports in June 2018 as the NFL and NCAA Basketball Rules Analyst for the CBS Television Network’s coverage of the NFL and NCAA basketball seasons. He has served as the rules analyst for the Network’s coverage of the Super Bowl (LIII, LV) and the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship and Final Four (2019, 2021).

 

Steratore spent 15 years on the field as an NFL game official, 13 as a referee. In total, he was a football official for 33 years officiating high school, college and NFL, as well as a basketball official for 35 years officiating high school and college basketball, including 22 years as a Division I basketball official.

 

Steratore entered the NFL as a field judge in 2003, was promoted to referee in 2006 and worked 14 playoff games. He finished his career as the referee in Super Bowl LII. Steratore also worked two conference championships, as well as serving as the alternate referee for Super Bowl XLIV.

 

Steratore started officiating NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball in 1997 and worked numerous Conference and NCAA Tournament games, including the Big Ten (10 years), ACC (3 years), Big East (6 years), Atlantic 10 (22 years), Mid-American (11 years), Colonial (8 years), Horizon (8 years), Metro-Atlantic (9 years), Summit (4 years) and Northeast (21 years). Steratore officiated 12 NCAA Tournament games including two in the “Sweet 16,” and Conference tournament games: 35 in the Big Ten (four Conference Championships and eight semi-final games), 12 in the Big East and 40 in the Atlantic 10 (six Conference Championships, six semi-final games). He finished his basketball career as a Big Ten primary official.

 

Steratore is the co-owner of Steratore Supply, Inc., a full line paper/janitorial supply business, with his brother, Tony, who also works as an NFL back judge.

 

Steratore has three adult children and resides with his fiancé, Lisa, in Washington, Pa.
