CBS SPORTS SHOWCASES MULTI-PLATFORM COVERAGE AND INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY TO PRESENT 2023 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP FROM OAK HILL COUNTRY CLUB

CBS Sports to Broadcast PGA Championship for the 40th Time, with Third and Final Round Live Coverage Airing Saturday-Sunday, May 20-21 (1:00-7:00 PM, ET) and Streaming on Paramount+

CBS Sports is set to broadcast the PGA Championship for the 33rd consecutive year and 40th time overall, with the 105th edition taking place at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., May 18-21. The network will offer multi-platform coverage throughout the week, highlighted by third and final round coverage (1:00-7:00 PM, ET; each day) on Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21 on the CBS Television Network, with coverage streaming live on Paramount+.

For the 33rd consecutive year, Jim Nantz, CBS Sports’ golf anchor, will host the network’s coverage from the 18th tower, and he’ll be joined in the super tower by lead analyst Trevor Immelman. Ian Baker-Finch and Frank Nobilo will serve as hole announcers and analysts, while lead on-course reporter Dottie Pepper, along with Colt Knost and Mark Immelman will offer perspective from inside the ropes. Amanda Renner will provide reports and conduct interviews.

In partnership with the PGA of America, CBS Sports and ESPN once again will provide live, wire-to-wire coverage of the PGA Championship Thursday through Sunday, with CBS Sports leading overall production efforts.

Live coverage will be enhanced by a vast array of innovative technology, microphones and cameras to bring fans closer to the action. As part of those efforts, CBS Sports for the first time will transition to IP video and audio distribution, a state-of-the-art technology and revolutionary industry shift allowing for increased video and audio capacity to support the overall production.

In an effort to capture all the sights and sounds at Oak Hill, CBS Sports will deploy more than 120 cameras and nearly 150 microphones throughout the golf course, as well as 440 record channels of EVS (a live replay and highlight system). Additional technological and production enhancements include:

  • New PGA Championship Graphics Package – In partnership with the PGA of America and ESPN, CBS Sports’ coverage will implement a new PGA Championship-specific graphics package. It will incorporate golf course-inspired contour lines and speak to a more youthful, dynamic identity while expanding the core navy blue and gold color palette synonymous with the PGA Championship with the addition of a new ‘mulligan mint’ accent.
  • New PGA Championship Theme Music – An original score written specifically for the PGA Championship, the new theme music will include several ancillary versions.
  • Live Drone Coverage – Multiple state-of-the-art drones will be in use as a live camera source for coverage at Oak Hill, providing unique, scenic views during live action.
  • Robotic Cameras – Coverage will deploy 12 robotic cameras in total and a curved-rail camera positioned along the par-5 13th hole.
    • Bunker cameras also will return, with four mini robotic cameras embedded within two greenside bunkers on the drive-able par-4 14th hole.
    • For the first time, CBS Sports’ bunker camera technology also will utilize a 360-degree, 4K camera (often used for “pylon camera” technology on football broadcasts) by situating a robo cam within the expansive greenside bunker on the par-3 15th hole.
  • Fly Cam and Augmented Reality Technology – Two Fly Cam technology systems will be utilized, spanning from the practice facility to Oak Hill’s 1st and 18th holes, along with the par-5 13th green and par-4 14th tee. The cameras will stretch nearly 1,200 feet and oscillate up and down to provide multiple vantage points of the golf course. The Fly Cams also will have the ability to track virtual graphics with augmented reality technology, sweeping past (or through) graphics that viewers are seeing on-screen.
  • Atlas Camera – CBS will again deploy its Atlas Camera technology, offering a shallow, depth-of-field perspective to show players walking the course with a cinematic feel.
  • Toptracer  Toptracer broadcast technology will be implemented on all 18 holes as well as the practice facility, using 3D radar tracking to provide the viewer with a true sense of distance, height and curvature. A staple of this technology will be tracing live tee shots on various holes showing the apex, ball speed, distance and curve.
  • Toptracer RF – Toptracer will outfit four RF mini cameras to provide ball tracking graphics and statistics on a player’s shot from the fairway throughout the entire golf course.
  • ARL Virtual Eye – Virtual Eye technology returns with coverage on every hole, as well as the practice facility. Virtual Eye uses Toptracer ball tracing capabilities on tee shots to provide an overhead slab view of the hole. Also returning will be full page displays detailing how golfers played certain holes during previous rounds, as well as statistical insight from Shotlink and virtual flyover animations, giving a second shot perspective once the ball comes to rest.
  • Wind Analysis – Numerous anemometers measuring wind speed, direction and daily wind trends will be strategically placed around the course to capture wind data on each hole and how it may influence player’s shot choices.
  • SwingVision – CBS returns its Emmy Award-winning technical innovation. Featuring super-slow mo action to break down swings of those in the field and to demonstrate shots from various parts of the course, there will be two SwingVisions deployed to capture twice as many dramatic shot replays.

CBS Sports coverage is led by lead producer Sellers Shy, along with Jim Rikhoff, and directed by lead director Steve Milton, along with Bob Matina. Chris Svendsen and Bryan Kosowski serve as replay producers. Sean McManus is Chairman, CBS Sports. David Berson is President, CBS Sports. Harold Bryant is Executive Producer and Executive Vice President, Production, CBS Sports.
