Following are excerpts from the show:

(ON THE COLTS UPSET WIN OVER THE PACKERS):

Phil Simms: I’m going to celebrate the good. And the good is, you look at this Colts offense. I look at Andrew Luck, it’s hard to believe he’s a rookie quarterback. They’re not easing him into this offense. They started the season and they’re giving him every single play. He’s making checks. He reads the coverage. He’s throwing into tight spots. I’ll tell you one thing he does very well, he throws on the run as good as anybody I’ve seen come into this league in a long time. And I categorize him this way, when you look at Andrew Luck, I think he’s the same size as Ben Roethlisberger, except he’s a lot faster.

Steve Beuerlein: You can’t overstate the significance of the win for the Indianapolis Colts yesterday. What a great story. But I think the much bigger story is the status of the Green Bay Packers. Two losses in the last three weeks to Seattle and Indianapolis. Nobody thought the Packers would be here. They’ve lost control of that NFC North. And that to me, is as big a story as anything in the NFL right now.

Dan Fouts: The Green Bay Packers are in real trouble. They can’t get to the quarterback and sack the quarterback. Their pass defense is absolutely non-existent. And if this continues when they’ve got guys like (Jay) Cutler still in the division looking for revenge, the Packers have got to shore things up with their defense. They can’t put it all on Aaron Rodgers and the offense each week.

(ON TOM BRADY AND THE PATRIOTS’ OFFENSE):

Simms: They were outstanding. They had the hurry-up, rushing offense going yesterday. They were playing at a speed that I have not seen in the NFL ever. They give you lots of formations, they go at this pace, and they have a running back in Stevan Ridley playing so much better than he did last year, his rookie year. Also, they have an offensive line that’s mobile. Tom Brady does a wonderful job of directing this offense, and getting them in the right formation and keeping the pace going.

(ON DREW BREES):

Gannon: When you study Drew Brees, it all starts with his understanding of the protection scheme. He’s never surprised by what he sees from a defense. And his ability to move around and manipulate the pocket to find that open passing lane. And of course his accuracy, which I think is the best in football.

(ON MATT RYAN AND THE FALCONS):

Beuerlein: Matty Ice has got it going right now in Atlanta. In the NFC South they’re up 3.5 games after only five. What can you say except this is a team playing as a total team: offense, defense and special teams. But specifically on offense. The running backs are playing well, the O-line is protecting Matt Ryan and his receivers are coming up big. If they decide to take someone away, the other guys step up. Tony Gonzalez yesterday had 13 catches. Roddy White with 11. Matty Ryan has got it going great.

(ON ALEX SMITH):

Fouts: Alex Smith has got that offense going. The 49ers have always had outstanding defense, but offensively yesterday, a franchise record of 621 yards of total offense. The first team in NFL history to ever rush for over 300 yards and pass for over 300 yards in a single game. Alex Smith getting it done with the help of offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Alex Smith still has that ability to get out of the pocket and make yards on the ground.
