McILROY, WESTWOOD, WOODS, MICKELSON, BRADLEY AND GLOVER COMPETE IN STAR-PACKED FIELD AT “WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP” ON CBS SPORTS, MAY 5-6
The world’s top players, including defending champion Lucas Glover, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley and Rickie Fowler compete this weekend at the PGA TOUR's WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP as CBS Sports broadcasts third- and final-round coverage from Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 (3:00-6:00 PM, ET; both days), live on the CBS Television Network.
Jim Nantz, three-time Emmy Award winner and five-time National Sportscaster of the Year, now in his 27th year covering golf at CBS, serves as anchor of CBS Sports’ golf coverage. Sir Nick Faldo, winner of six majors and more than 40 tournaments worldwide, serves as lead analyst alongside Nantz in the 18th hole tower. Ian Baker-Finch calls the action at the 17th hole and Gary McCord at the 16th. David Feherty and Peter Kostis serve as on-course reporters. Lance Barrow is Coordinating Producer and Steve Milton is Director of CBS Sports’ golf coverage. Harold Bryant is Executive Producer and Vice President, Production, CBS Sports.
Last year, Glover and his former Clemson teammate Jonathan Byrd went to a playoff after Glover began the final round three strokes behind Byrd. The 2009 U.S. Open winner made par on the first extra-hole to win his first playoff on the PGA TOUR. Since the first tournament in 2003, the Wells Fargo Championship annually attracts one of the top fields in golf. This year’s field includes 20 of the Top-30 players in the FedExCup standings and five of the Top-10 players in the World Rankings: McIlroy, Westwood, Woods, Mickelson and Hunter Mahan. The championship field also includes Graeme McDowell, Bill Haas, Nick Watney, Webb Simpson, Jim Furyk, Bo Van Pelt, Camilo Villegas, Kyle Stanley, Anthony Kim, John Huh, Jason Day, Vijay Singh, David Toms, Angel Cabrera, Sang-Moon Bae, Charles Howell III, Aaron Baddeley, J.B. Holmes, David Duval, Rory Sabbatini, Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson, Johnson Wagner, Geoff Ogilvy, Ben Curtis, Ryan Moore, D.A. Points, Andres Romero, Stuart Appleby, Steve Flesch, Jhonattan Vegas, Robert Allenby, Trevor Immelman, Rocco Mediate, Kevin Na, Bradley, Fowler and Byrd, as well local favorite Davis Love III, playing here for the 10th consecutive year.
OFF THE TEE WITH PETER KOSTIS
(On Tiger Woods’ return to Quail Hollow after a disappointing Masters):
If you take Bay Hill, where he won, and the Masters, where he played poorly, this week is kind of a rubber match. It’s the rubber game of the three-game series to determine, in a lot of people’s eyes, which tournament was an aberration. Was it Bay Hill or was it Augusta? If he plays well this week, then Augusta was an aberration and his recovery is continuing on course. If he doesn’t play well, then his detractors especially are going to say that Bay Hill was a fluke. So, I consider this week to be very important for Tiger to continue his progress. But, in this day-and-age of instant analysis, it’s going to be the rubber game of the match and people will form their opinions whether he is making progress or he’s regressing.”
(On the field):
It’s a phenomenal field. That’s a testament to (Quail Hollow Club President) Johnny Harris, Charlotte, and Quail Hollow. Hopefully we get the Tigers and the McIlroys, the Westwoods, and the Mickelsons in the battle on Sunday. That’s what people want to see. People are a little bit aggravated with the World #1 ranking changing while one player is sitting home taking a week off. They want to see the battle mano-a-mano. Hopefully this weekend we will get the big names competing. But, also what tends to generally happen where you see all these great players, you wind up with somebody who is a rookie or non-winner right there in the hunt.
