AUDIBLES WITH CBS SPORTS LEAD COLLEGE ANNOUNCE TEAM
GARY DANIELSON AND VERNE LUNDQUIST
Danielson - (On SEC being best conference): These are only snap shots; nobody gets this for the rest of their life. This snap shot right now clearly shows the SEC is the best conference. Of course Texas and Oklahoma and usually Michigan, Ohio State and USC, they can compete anywhere. What separates the SEC is that you can name seven schools in this conference that all believe they should win their conference championships every year. And the intensity of their losses are just like they are at Oklahoma and Texas. Those goals probably aren't realistic for all those coaches, but that is just the way it is here. It's very tough to go through this league week in and week out. You don't roll your helmets on the football field in this league and get a win, each one of them has to be earned.
Danielson - (On Big East top teams): The three favorites haven't played anybody. They have yet to do it on a consistent basis. That upward level challenge still has to be done. I don't believe that those teams could compete week-in and week-out with the top two or three teams in a couple of the power conferences. They are a slight step below.
Lundquist - (On Tennessee-Florida rivalry): It's one of the great rivalries in college football. It's not Alabama-Auburn, but it is an early-season rivalry that has impact for both teams in the SEC and the national picture almost every year. The "Urban legend" will continue to grow if Florida wins again this weekend. I know it would mean the world for Phillip Fulmer and Tennessee to win this game, but that's a tough task going down there.
Danielson - (On Mark Richt being soft): The same things were said about Tony Dungy when he couldn't get it finalized. It's wrong to generalize and you can't work your way up to the level that Mark Richt has worked his way to and have the success he's had at a tough place like Georgia, and be soft. It's not possible.
Danielson - (On who could play for the BCS): A very strong argument will be Oklahoma. That is as fine a young quarterback that I have seen in a long time. That is the one nice thing about being in that conference, they know who they have to beat. That is one team that has, as Les Miles would say, an easier way to get there.
