Some rest their regulars as much as possible. Others, like New England head coach Bill Belichick, do not…Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had a solid outing in his pre-season opener. For another coach, that might have been enough. But Brady ended up seeing extensive action in games two and three. So here was the two-time Super Bowl MVP and three-time Super Bowl champ working as hard as any quarterback in the league this summer…It's interesting to note that this approach to his offensive star is being employed by Belichick, who is known as a great defensive coach. You can take it a step further and look at other head coaches who built their reputations on defense -- Bill Parcells and Bill Cowher. I would make the case that Belichick, Parcells and Cowher have all had success in handling their quarterbacks, perhaps because of the way they can dissect the weaknesses in opposing quarterbacks…(On Rex Grossman): I fully expect Chicago Bears quarterback Rex Grossman to get off to a good start this week. Grossman has been criticized by those in the media who would like to create a quarterback controversy in Chicago, but his talent -- and the talent around him -- will be enough to prevent that from happening. This week's opponent, Green Bay, has been struggling on defense. So, it's a perfect opportunity for Grossman and the Bears offense to build some confidence…I think you'll see the Bears open things up (More) NFL ON CBS…2 in the passing game this year and show people they are a different team offensively. They'll get off to a good start here…(On Denver Broncos): Did everybody forget that the Denver Broncos went to the AFC Championship Game last year? And did anybody notice that Denver looks like it could be more wide open this year?..It looks to me as if the Denver offense will put more pressure on opposing defenses this season. When I look at their offense, I see all the parts in place. As much as people talk about how Terrell Owens will put the Dallas Cowboys' offense over the top, that's how much of an impact I think Javon Walker will have in Denver…Of course, high expectations can be funny. The Broncos could end up having a great season, but the only way they can improve on last season -- on paper, at least -- is to get past the AFC title game and reach the Super Bowl. (On Indianapolis-New York Giants): Forget about the sibling rivalry that will be the center of attention Sunday night when the Colts face the New York Giants. The biggest story in my mind will be how the Colts -- a team that has been on the cusp of reaching the Super Bowl for a few years now -- handles a very tough season opener…Of course, you can't put too much emphasis on the first game of the season, but it's a good test for the Colts. The Giants have a very physical defense and they have a stable of big-play talent on offense. Come to think of it, forget the fact that the quarterbacks share the same last name. These two teams could be mirror images in many ways...Even with the Colts' no-huddle offense, the stadium will be loud and it will be a tough environment for the visiting team. If the Colts can go into Giants Stadium Sunday night and come away with a victory, it will tell you a lot about the toughness and determination of this team. A loss would not be the end of the world, but a win could be a sign that the Colts can be a major factor this season…For more, log on NFL.Com. * * * * * Following are the NFL assignments for Week 1, Week 2 and Week 3 (subject to change).
