CBS SPORTS CELEBRATES 50th ANNIVERSARY OF ‘THE NFL TODAY’ WITH THROWBACK WEEK
Week 3 Throwback Content to be Highlighted by Vintage Edition of THE NFL TODAY on Sunday, Sept. 21
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1975 version of THE NFL TODAY with Brent Musburger, Irv Cross and Phyllis George – which became the prototypical pregame show – CBS Sports will bring viewers back in time throughout Week 3 of the 2025 NFL season, paying homage to the groundbreaking studio show that altered the landscape of sports TV.
The weeklong celebration will be highlighted by a vintage edition of THE NFL TODAY at Noon, ET on Sunday, Sept. 21, with special guests, retro graphics and music, and innovative technology including a virtual re-creation of the 1975 NFL TODAY set.
Musburger, who hosted THE NFL TODAY from 1975 to 1990, will join host James Brown in studio alongside analysts Bill Cowher, Nate Burleson and Matt Ryan.
The show will feature its usual highlights, news and analysis of the NFL's top storylines, and also reflect on the past 50 years of THE NFL TODAY with an on-air look that celebrates show’s historic half-century of NFL studio coverage.
The NFL ON CBS will also feature throwback themes throughout Week 3 game coverage, with flashback clips and musical elements throughout the day. Additionally, as part of their own throwback celebrations, several NFL clubs have announced that they will be wearing throwback uniforms in Week 3 including the New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
CBS Sports will roll out throwback content across its digital platforms throughout the week leading up to September 21. Content will appear on CBS Sports HQ, CBSSports.com, and social platforms including Instagram, X, TikTok and YouTube.
Debuting on Sept. 21, 1975, the modern version of THE NFL TODAY was the first live studio show that took viewers across the entire country, previewing and highlighting every game in the NFL.
