Sonequa Martin-Green has had a commanding and dynamic presence on screen since the early 2000s and has become one of television and film’s most compelling and trailblazing talents.

 

Martin-Green is widely recognized for her historic role as Michael Burnham on STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, where she made franchise history as the first Black female Starfleet captain. The series helped launch Paramount+ and ran for five acclaimed seasons, with Martin-Green also serving as a producer. She built a devoted fan base during her six-season run as Sasha Williams on “The Walking Dead.” Her additional television credits include THE GOOD WIFE, “Once Upon a Time,” “New Girl” and “Star Trek: Discovery Logs.”

 

On the big screen, Martin-Green received critical praise for her breakout performance in “Toe to Toe,” which premiered at Sundance. She also appeared in “Yelling to the Sky” opposite Jason Clarke and Zoë Kravitz, “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” and “The Outside Story” opposite Brian Tyree Henry. Most recently, she starred in “My Dead Friend Zoe” alongside Natalie Morales, Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman, which won the Audience Award at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival. She followed that with “She Dances,” which premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, and “Sarah’s Oil” opposite Zachary Levi.

 

On stage, Martin-Green earned acclaim for her performance as Sonji Clay in Des McAnuff’s “Fetch Clay, Make Man” and starred in “Outside People” at New York’s Vineyard Theatre.

 

Born on March 21, in Russellville, Ala., Martin-Green holds a degree in theater from the University of Alabama. She is a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and women’s empowerment and often speaks about the importance of representation in media.
