When Deacon and Kelly agree to take Arthur out for dinner so Doug and Carrie can have some private time, they ignore Carrie's warnings about Arthur's reaction to spicy foods. When Carrie and Doug spend a sleepless night taking care of Arthur and his stomach, they begin to wonder if this was done on purpose to get out of future babysitting duties.

After Doug and Carrie run into Doug's ex-girlfriend, Trish (Janeane Garofalo) at an art gallery, Doug explains to Carrie that she took the breakup pretty hard. Feeling bad for her, Carrie decides to take Trish out to lunch, against Doug's wishes. After their lunch, Carrie is ready to end their friendship as well, but then learns she works at Saks Fifth Avenue and has an employee discount. Meanwhile, Spence agrees to go out with a guy, even though he's not gay, just to boost his morale.
