SHARYN ALFONSI IS NAMED A CBS NEWS CORRESPONDENT

Sharyn Alfonsi has been named a CBS News correspondent based in New York, it was announced by Marcy McGinnis, Senior Vice President, News Coverage, CBS News. Her appointment is effective Monday, July 26.

Alfonsi had been a freelance correspondent for the CBS EVENING NEWS weekend edition, UP TO THE MINUTE and CBS NEWSPATH, the Network's 24-hour news service, since December 2003. Among the stories she has covered for the Network are the Martha Stewart trial and the return of U.S. soldiers from Iraq.

Before that, Alfonsi worked as a reporter and substitute anchor for WBZ-TV, the CBS Owned station in Boston (2000-03), where she covered the ongoing Catholic church scandal and the Michael Skakel trial, among other stories.

She served as reporter and substitute anchor for KIRO-TV Seattle (1998-2000) and was a general assignment reporter covering the military for WVEC-TV Norfolk, Va. (1995-97). Alfonsi began her career in broadcast journalism at KHBS-TV Ft. Smith, Ark. (1994-95), where she served as a news reporter, weekend weather anchor, photographer and editor.

She has received seven Associated Press Awards and one Women in Communication Award for Excellence.

Alfonsi grew up in McLean, Va. She graduated from the University of Mississippi, Oxford in 1994 with a bachelor of science degree in political science and journalism studies. She lives in New York.
