"48 HOURS INVESTIGATES: 'SEARCHING FOR ANGELA SHELTON'" CHRONICLES A FILMMAKER'S SEARCH FOR WOMEN WITH HER NAME AND THEIR ABUSE STORIES SIMILAR TO HER OWN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10
In 2001, Angela Shelton, an actor, model and screenwriter ("Tumbleweeds"), had an idea for an extremely personal project -- a film that would take her across America to search for and interview other women named Angela Shelton. She wanted to use their stories to paint a portrait of American women and discover how many of them shared a similar dark secret she'd been keeping for years. Shelton had told very few people that, as a child, her father molested her. Now, she wanted to search for other women who may have been abused in some way. Correspondent Bill Lagattuta reports for 48 HOURS INVESTIGATES: "Searching for Angela Shelton," to be broadcast Wednesday, March 10 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Over two months, Shelton found a cross-section of American women. The 32 other Angelas she spoke to were of many backgrounds, races and shapes. It was one of the last Angelas, Shelton met, who had the most profound impact on her, however. She was a college student living near Charleston, S.C., who was writing her thesis on sexual predators. And, this Angela lived less than five miles away from the filmmaker's own father. Shelton knew the time had come to confront the man who had haunted her for years, and the college student offered to go along on a day that seemed perfectly suited for the occasion: Father's Day.
The confrontation and its aftermath have made a world of difference for Shelton, who is lifting the curtain on a new life. Back home in Los Angeles, she is putting the finishing touches on her movie, "Searching for Angela Shelton."
48 HOURS INVESTIGATES brings a group of Angela Sheltons together to meet each other for the first time and have a reunion with the woman who they all say touched their lives with her camera, her courage and her familiar name.
