Drew: You and Gillian Anderson in ‘The X-Files,’ is it true that you were the internet’s first sex symbol?

David: I don’t know if I can say true or false but at first I remember, ‘Why aren’t they just interested in the show? Why aren’t they just interested in the product,’ they’re interested in the person.

Drew: There were fan groups with specific names. Do you remember any of them?

David: It was the David Duchovny estrogen brigade.

Drew: There was a Duchovnics.

Drew: But that show was so personal for people. That show was very important to people.

David:…It fulfills something at the time that wasn’t out there, wasn’t on tv, there wasn’t like a scary, smart show.

Drew:…Did people talk to you about it, fanatically. Was there that connection, I heard you got fan letters, and people would reach out with their real-life experiences.

David: It was humbling in a way because when the show first started I’d get like fifteen fan mail letters a week and I thought it was my responsibility to take them home and answer them. And then as I started reading letters some of them were very sad and they were about loneliness and people reaching out and feeling that they’ve been abducted and I was like, ‘I don’t have the answers, I’m not qualified. Here’s an autographed picture.’

Drew: Is it true that you and I did an audition once for a film?

David: Yeah I auditioned for a film that you were doing.

Drew: What was it, do you remember?

David: Well I didn’t get it so.

Drew: I don’t know if I had a decision in that process.

David: I think I had to climb a ladder at one point in the audition, and we were doing some gag, I was not at my best, and you were right not to hire me.

Drew: I would never not want to work with you.
