Drew: Let’s get real you have 18 million followers on Instagram, when I see that I’m like, ‘Oh, they are in such a safe place with you.’

Lily: I honestly feel so lucky to have this incredible community that has surrounded me on social media especially Instagram, that is so empowering not just to me but to one another. They’ve created pen pals-ship around the world where they support one another through things they are going through and insecurities. I was inspired to write my book because of young people from around the world sharing their stories next to their photos, it’s like I am just like you, we’ve all gone through those things whether it’s relationships with your parents, yourself, bad romantic relationships, things like body image issues, eating disorders. Things so many people can relate to that may not necessarily think I can because of the common conception of Hollywood, the job, the physical aesthetic of the industry and all that. It’s like, no actually I can probably relate to those things way more than you think I can and it’s ultimately so freeing to talk about because then I feel like I can shed that layer. At least that’s what I’ve found it was a gift for me to connect with others about those things.

Lily on Being Born Into Music Royalty, “There is a saying, ‘Personality can open doors, character keeps them open.’”

Drew: You grew up in music royalty and I grew up with a last name, even though my family was gone for a very long time in the early 80’s when I came on the scene, but there can be a perception of what are your experiences? And then, I think what ends of happening in the best of circumstances, that bubble that seems rather extraordinary and unrelatable maybe makes you grow up a little faster, open up a little quicker. It. Kind of makes you get down to business and reality in a strange way.

Lily: Yeah, I totally agree and it gave me such a drive to want to feel like I deserved to be where I am. There is a saying, ‘Personality can open doors, character keeps them open.’ It’s like for a certain amount of time a last name could be something that’s interesting but at the end of the day you’ve got to bring something to the table. Yeah, I maybe had to grow up a little quicker but I was also exposed to the pros and cons at an early age and I still chose it for me.

Lily on Getting Engaged

Drew: And by the way excuse me, I didn’t mean to bury the lead, congratulations on your engagement!

Lily: I am a fiancée.

Drew: Is he lovely and kind and good?

Lily: Yes, I am the luckiest. I am so grateful and truly feel the happiest I’ve ever been. I am very very lucky.

Jonathan Van Ness & Drew on Courage To Share & Freedom It Gives You But Also Toll It Takes

https://drewbarrymoreshow.cimediacloud.com/r/L56M3g63Bvjj

Drew: What gives you the courage/freedom to share?

Jonathan: If I can help prevent anyone else from feeling the really negative side effects of rejecting yourself. I talk about in my book a lot this idea of being normal and my fear of not being normal is what drove me to such self-destructive behaviors.  I so want to help people avoid that but I still struggle with that very same thing. My self-destructive behaviors are like name searching myself on Twitter or fighting with a family member who I know I can’t win with, so it’s like go with someone you can win with. The courage is kind of necessity because I know what it’s like to suffer and feel really isolated and be dealing with addiction or whatever. I really want to offer some of the tools that  I used to get to where I am because it’s just such a lonely place.

Drew: Sometimes I think my life would be very different, like I was in an institution and they broke in and broke the story on like the Enquirer and it was embarrassing and it was hard. It was something I would have liked to preferably kept a secret but I wasn’t able to but because I was sort of exposed, if you will, I chose to make that a moment of freedom and I would never have to be perfect or pretend to be perfect again. I love that you’ve put so many things out there, especially in your book and it’s not easy to share those things.

Jonathan: No, I didn’t understand how it was going to open me up to being a strength for other people’s stories and people sharing their stories with me which I love that…in being open and honest so many people were sharing with me where they were in their stories and so kind of going back into some of those places so often, being strong for that person but then later on it’s just so much to take on and be that rock for people at some point you are like I need to sit on my couch and watch Bob’s Burgers and cuddle with my cat for like three weeks because the reality of what that costs your nervous system, and not to complain because I never would have dreamed, like look at my shelves, I can’t believe I have shelves, I really don’t’ want to complain because I am so grateful. I just think kind of the reality of the last few years and becoming a public figure and sharing all that stuff, it was like, Oh my God.
