Julianne Moore on Playing Iconic Gloria Steinem

Drew: …and Ruth Bader Ginsburg who I’ve just spent the last week voraciously studying, if you are watching her documentary Gloria Steinem comes up and Gloria Steinem is one of the great world changers, game changers. When she came up into your world how fast was it before you said yes to portraying her.

Julianne: Oh man, it was immediate. Julie Taymor contacted me about it and I was like, ‘Yes, absolutely. I would love to be a part of this.’ It wasn’t until after that that I really thought about what it would entail. She’s so iconic and so meaningful to so many people and has been emblematic I think of the women’s movement in the United States. I also didn’t realize how challenging it would be because she actually has a kind of quiet recessive quality sometimes. She’s known as one of the world’s great listeners so it’s not a very active thing to play as an actor and her speech pattern and her accent is very unique. She is someone who will step back and promote other people and their words. So it was very, very challenging but so fantastic trying to absorb who she was in that way.

Drew: I think for as much as I care about everyone and I’m such a people person not sure I’m comfortable in the silences, I definitely am a good listener but I’m a huge talker also. These women they just posses sort of an inner confidence which is so admirable but what they do with it is all this outward protection of others.

Julianne: Absolutely. One of the things that really struck me about Gloria is that she’s not reactive, she’s not rash. People said really horrific things to her, they just loaded it on her. She always came from a point, she would listen, she would wait, then she would respond but she never responded with any kind of heat, she always responded with intellect. And she wasn’t cruel to anyone ever and incredibly tolerant of other people’s views. I do think about that, I really think when I’m talking to people, I’m like, ‘What would Gloria do? How would she react?’ Maybe take the time to be more like her.

Drew: Your love story is such relationship goals.

Julianne: What’s really funny about it is that you say years ago, it was 24 years ago, that’s what is shocking to us, we are like, ‘We met 24 years ago?’

Drew: Can I ask you a weird personal question, you and your husband are so amazing. Do you have any tips for people on an awesome union, marriage? Do you have a secret, something you turn to? I think a lot of us would love to know if you have any tips or insight.

Julianne: The only thing I can say is I think that you both have to really want to be married. I do feel like I’ve seen situations where things aren’t working out for people because one member of the couple doesn’t want to be there. I think if you are both invested in it working out that’s important. You really have to have a good time. I think they have to make you laugh, if they don’t make you laugh it’s just deadly. And somebody asked me the other day if it felt long a long time and I was like, ‘Oddly no it doesn’t.’ That’s what has been nice about it, it doesn’t feel like a long time. But now our kids our 18 and 22. How old are your kids now?

Drew: Frankie is six and Olive is eight.

Julianne: Oh my goodness. So are they in school virtually?

Drew: No, they went back and I had such a struggle with it because as a parent I wasn’t sure and for the show’s sake I was worried about what they were going to bring back in. But then I thought Oh my God what a Hollywood stage nightmare mother I would be like, ‘ You can’t go to school because mom can’t get sick at her job.’ So I was like guess what we are just rolling the dice because every time we try to plan it’s so terrifying and everything keeps having to pivot anyway and I feel it’s kind of rude to wrestle anymore and just succumb.

Julianne: My daughter was a camp counselor at this little camp that she went to when she was a kid, she had three and four year old girls and the counselors all wore masks but the kids didn’t because they were too little and everybody was fine, they were all okay. And those kids were all over her. I do think with testing and everything like that that things can be done safely but it’s hard. It’s really hard.

Drew: I know all of a sudden a hug is so much more than just a hug. Will I get sick hugging you? Will I make you sick? This is a lot going into a quick hug.

Julianne on Role In Upcoming Film “Dear Evan Hansen”

https://youtu.be/vgtiRkne-48

Drew: And really quickly, Dear Evan Hansen. I love this play so much, are you excited?

Julianne: I am so excited, I am besides myself. I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it happened.

Drew: This story I also feel is so important for people. We talk about mental health, all these issues now trying to be in the forefront and on the table. And then Ben Platt, a role he seemed born to play. For a lot of people watching the play was the moment everything really clicks is his relationship with his mother and you’ll be playing her and I’m so excited for this and for everyone to have access to it.

Julianne: I feel so lucky, it really is a beautiful, beautiful piece and I think it will make a wonderful movie.
