Will Arnett on the Story Behind His New Movie with Bradley Cooper and Their Long Friendship

https://app.cimediacloud.com/r/RLPE7hFJz8sD

Drew: Whose true story is this?

Will: So it's inspired by the story, the true story of this comedian, English comedian John Bishop, who's a really hilarious guy who I happened to meet, I'm not joking, on a canal boat in Amsterdam and at a lunch with just randomly.

Drew: There's a setting.

Will: I know, right? And John tells me the story of how he became a stand-up, which was that he was going through a separation, he was gonna get divorced, and he was, Mondays were really tough because he had his kids for the weekend and Mondays he dropped them at school and he wasn't gonna see them till the weekend. And it was really, it was a tough time for him.

Drew: It's the worst.

Will: It's the worst and a lot of us can relate to that, and have been through that and it's, yeah, it's the worst feeling. And he stumbles into, he goes to a bar because he's gonna go have a drink, he doesn't know what else to kind of to do, and they're charging a cover because they're doing open mic, and he doesn't want to pay, you know, this is in English, so he doesn't want to pay the 4 pounds, so he puts his name down on the list. Never done stand-up, has no connection to it. And they end up calling him. He figures I'll get in there, sneak in a quick beer, and I'll get out. And they call him and he goes out and he doesn't know what to do and he just starts talking about for the first time kind of to himself and to the world, he says, I think I'm getting a divorce. And it sort of sparks something in him. He starts talking and it allows him to start talking about his life. And it's a, so he tells me this story and I think like, wow, this is amazing and so that's, that was sort of the genesis of it and you know, and then Bradley came on.

Drew: And Bradley and you have been friends for decades. Is that, is that correct?

Will: Bradley and I have been friends for about 25 years. We were sort of roommates. We shared a back, like this back house in Venice, California, years ago. It was very much almost like ‘Three's Company.’ Like our doors kind of opened into each other. And then one property over we, was Dennis Hopper lived, and we saw, yeah, and we were young actors and we'd look and we're like, do you see Dennis Hopper, you know, and, boy was I happy. It was so simple, like there was so like it was such a, you know, now of course I'm super happy now and I've got, I've, I couldn't be richer with family and kids and stuff and all that stuff, but it's different, like you can't imagine back then what your life can become.

Drew & Will on The Real Portrayal of Divorce & How It Affects the Family in His New Movie

Drew: And I also haven't seen two parents talk about how this will affect the kids being together or not being together as in-depthly and realistically as you do in this. It doesn't even feel like a film. It feels like an incredible unveiling of like fly on the wall.

Will: Yeah, I mean, again, thank you. We wanted it to feel like a really genuine representation. I think that here's the other thing it's like I always think about this notion that like there are gonna be times in any relationship, and we've all been there, where it's not gonna be perfect, and it's not gonna feel good, and if you say like this idea that like, I'm only gonna be happy if it's sunny out, well then you're screwed if it rains. You know, and you have to allow that there are going to be moments where it's not perfect, and then that's OK.

Will on His Golden Globe Nomination for “SmartLess” Podcast with Sean Hayes & Jason Bateman

Drew: You have these deep-rooted friendships, and now that's being celebrated because like the Golden Globes literally just developed a new category because the podcast, world is so big and so the Golden Globes is literally like, let's acknowledge this, let's have a category for best podcast. I also, I saw, your friend Sean Hayes and I was like, I don't know how you guys have done this in a very crowded market you came in and you shot to be the most, you know, highly rated, highly successful, powerful podcast, and you're nominated for the Golden Globe. I mean, it's by the way, it's called SmartLess, everybody knows it, so I just assume.

Will: We, I honest to God, I'm, I'm not kidding when I say that we can't believe it most of the time we're like, who wants to listen to us talking to each other and, you know, making fun of Sean and with Jason Bateman, whom I know that you know a little bit, Well If you met him, you might not clap so much.

Drew: Not only yes, but do you know where I first met Jason Bateman?

Will: OK, hang on, the viper room.

Drew: God, no, but that would have been cool.

Will: That's a kind of a good guess. Hang on, at the Von's on Ventura.

Drew: No, that would have been good too, and all these places are so probable, right? Yeah, it was on the set of his television show called ‘Silver Spoons’ with Ricky Schroeder. Remember that?

Will: But the fact that people want that and the fact that we're nominated for a Golden Globe for this thing that we just do that we would, don't tell anybody, we'd probably do for free, and, and that we're now nominating this thing and also my ex-wife Amy's also nominated in the same thing. And then, and Dax is nominated and it's all these people who are really important people in my life, in my life, you know, and I said, yesterday, Amy texted us and she said, you know, something like, let's party, and I don't have Bateman's number, which is probably a good, good thing. And then, and I said, just give us a shout out when you win, this is what I said to her. You know, it's so nice that we get to do this, it's crazy.

Will Shares How Thoughtful Sean & Jason Are as Friends

Sean: Hi, Will, it's Sean Hayes, you're locked out of your house. It's 3:00 a.m. and you spot a coyote looking at you from across the yard. Which of your fellow SmartLess podcasters are you calling to come get you? Me or Jason?

Drew: Oh, there's nothing worse than being split like that.

Will: I'd call Sean.

Drew: May I ask why?

Will: Yes, he'd be up. Cause I could, his sleep hygiene is terrible. He'd be up and also he's very responsible, but Jason's very responsible too. I have these guys, I have the greatest friends. I have the greatest male friendships, I think I'm so lucky. I remember.

Drew: By the way, I don't trust people who don't have strong friendships. Like that is such a red flag.

Will: So Sean's the kind of guy, he's so thoughtful, he's always sending stuff, you're doing, he'll send you like a care package out of the blue, it'll be at my house, like some sort of nice thing.

Jason, one time we were on the phone a couple of years ago, I mentioned that my back hurts.

25 minutes later he shows up with some of those heat pad things, an electric heat pad for me, and I nearly broke down into tears. I was like, you came over to bring this over, and he's like, yeah man, you told me your back hurt. Isn't that sweet? Yeah, anyway, Sean, definitely not Jason.

Drew: Sunny, what do you think?

Sunny: I mean, you said like I didn't know my vagina was sick. I didn't know I needed to take care of it like I, you know, I don't even curate the hair if that's something we need to talk about, yeah.

Drew: I the whole era of like the landing strip and all that I could never subscribe.

Sunny: I was in my twenties. I cared. I don't care anymore. I don't care even at the beach. You're gonna see some things.

Drew: If we're going on a vacation, I'm gonna have to tuck it in, you know. You know that action. We actually asked our medical Drew crew OBGYN Doctor Suzanne Gilbert Lenz, what did she say?

Ross: Give me a minute OK hold on. Doctor Suzanne said some of these products are not, they're not necessary for down there. They, she said it, it actually may cause, it may hurt your hoo ha down there if you, if you put too much stuff down there, it's not good.

Robby: Can I clarify something though? They were telling us for many years, and I thought this, that you're not supposed to wash down there, you let water.  No, no, no, actually you're supposed to wash it. Definitely wash it, definitely. I won't tell you. I've seen a few of them. I'm happily married now, but let me tell you, please wash.

Drew: Doctor Suzanne is always one of those just water advocates, and I'm like, what are you talking about?

Robby: Little Dove soap never killed anyone, OK? You get in there with a loofah, whatever you need.

Ross: Oh my god, I learn so much on this show, you know, so much whether I want to or not.
