Katherine Heigl on a Description of a Role That’s a Red Flag For Her

Drew: What is a red flag role description for you?

Katherine: You know I think now, not necessarily in my twenties, but now I kind of want to avoid the uptight, man has to soften her role. And I did a lot of it, and I enjoyed it and it was fun and we had a good but not at forty-four I’m like, ‘You’re not softening anything.’

Katherine Heigl on Not Changing Her Last Name to Her Husband’s Name When They Wed

Drew: Katherine, could your beautiful husband Josh, could he be a Heigl?

Katherine: Josh and I never actually had that conversation because it was just obvious I wasn’t going to take Kelley because I am a Heigl through and through, though Katherine Kelley sounds really lovely doesn’t it?

Ross: It does sound lovely, it sounds proper.

Drew: It could be an around the house nickname.

Katherine: It is my around the house nickname, but no he’s not a Heigl and we are our own sort of entities and people and then we have come together and created a family and are family to each other now. Sharing a last name doesn’t upholster that or hinder it in my opinion.

Katherine Heigl on Her Nearly 15 Year Marriage & Relationship with Her Daughters

Drew: You and your husband have been married for fifteen years in December, congratulations.

Katherine: Thank you. I can’t quite believe it. I don’t know how we made it this long.

Drew: How do you think you’ve made it this long?

Katherine: I think marriage is hard but the thing I keep leaning into again and again no matter how sort of disconnected we may get, no matter how much traveling may start happening, no matter how many miscommunications, which I think is a big one in marriage.

Drew: I tell my daughters too, tone, it’s not what you say it’s how you say it.

Katherine: 110%...Really aggressive.

Drew: So aggressive.

Katherine: But that’s me I’m the aggressive one. I think that’s obvious we all know this.

Drew: You do have so much moxie but it’s what we love about you too.

Katherine: I’m just older and bitter now.

Drew:…You have a really deep strength at your core, which is very admirable.

Katherine: I have a very strong mother and we’re very close. We talk twice a day, every day, coffee and cocktails.

Drew: Every mother’s dream.

Katherine: Well I don’t think this is going happen for me. I don’t think my girls will call me twice a day everyday…

Drew: That’s my fear too. I want that connection with them for life. They are my everything. Friendship, my female friendships and I always show the girls how important those are to me.
